Description
Australian Patents Act 1990 - Regulation 3.2 ORIGINAL COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Invention Title A valve top The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: P/00/0 11 5102 A VALVE TOP 100011 The invention relates to a valve top with a head piece, a spindle centrally penetrating the head piece and a valve body, actuatable via the spindle, for attachment at a valve seat of a housing according to the preamble of claim 1. 100021 A valve top of this type is known from GB 2 137 736 A. The valve top serves to control the outflow of media from armatures. For this purpose, the valve top by means of its head piece is screwed into the housing of an armature; a twist grip or lever is fastened to its spindle. 100031 A valve plug is provided for the control of the throughflow which is linearly movable via the spindle within the head piece. To achieve sealing tightness against the valve seat, the valve plug accommodates a disc which is fastened to the valve plug via a female screw or an integrally formed mushroom screw and is provided with a bore which permits a back flushing of the disc, whereby the disc as well as a sealing ring surrounding it are pressed against the valve seat. 100041 A disadvantage of the prior art valve top is that the manufacture of the disc as well as its mounting is very expensive. Furthermore, the sealing rings being employed are, to an increasing extent, no longer fulfilling the ever more demanding requirements relating to durability and sealing tightness. 100051 The present invention proposes to remedy this situation. It is the object of the invention to produce a valve top of the above mentioned type whose manufacture is simplified and whose sealing device satisfies the increasingly strict requirements relating to durability and sealing tightness. According to this invention, the solution to this task is provided by the features of the characterising part of claim 1.
-2 100061 The invention presents a valve top permitting simplified manufacture and having a sealing device satisfying the increasingly strict requirements relating to durability and sealing tightness. By virtue of the sealing disc which is arranged within the groove located concentric to the spindle axis and projects beyond the height of the groove, a defined jacking force of the sealing disc against the valve seat is effected. The edge of the valve plug externally bounding the groove hereby serves as stop against the valve seat. In addition, the sealing disc is supported by the groove walls all round thereby reducing wear. 100071 In a further development of the invention, a pin is integrally formed at the valve plug at its side directed towards the groove on the spindle axis, which pin is designed to accommodate a fixation element to fix the sealing disc. By virtue of the fixation of the sealing disc, relative movements of the sealing disc within the groove are prevented, thus further reducing wear. 100081 In one embodiment of the invention, the pin is provided with a thread, at least in sections, to accommodate a screw or nut body. This permits a simpler mounting of the screw or nut body being used as a fixation element. 100091 In a further embodiment of the invention, the pin is provided with an external thread onto which a domed cap nut is screwed jamming the sealing disc. By means of the domed nut, a complete sealing off of the disc against the flowing medium is achieved. 1000101 It is advantageous for the sealing disc to project by no more than 30% of its height from the groove, preferably by no more than 20%. This permits an excellent support of the sealing disc within the groove, combined with a sufficient jacking force of the sealing disc against the valve seat being achieved. In this arrangement, the sealing disc is advantageously made of an elastomer, preferably of rubber. 1000111 An essential feature in this aspect of the invention is that the height by which the sealing disc projects from the groove is selected to be of such dimension that a sufficient sealing tightness is safeguarded upon contact of the edge of the groove. The height is thus essentially determined by the elasticity of the sealing disc.
-3 1000121 In a further development of the invention, the valve plug is connected with the valve body via a frusto-conical section. By virtue of the frusto-conical section, the forces, introduced by the outer groove edge acting as stop, are evenly introduced into the valve body, whereby flexing effects are substantially prevented. 1000131 Additional further developments and embodiments of the invention are described in the further subordinate claims. One embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings and will be described in greater detail below. The sole Figure, 1, shows a valve top partially in general view, partially in axial cross-sectional view. 1000141 The valve top selected as embodiment example has a head piece 1, which is centrally penetrated by a spindle 2 radially guided therein. A valve body 3 is actuatable via the spindle 2, with the valve body 3 coming into attachment with the valve seat 61 of the housing 6. The valve body 3 has a substantially cylindrical valve plug 33 accommodating a sealing disc 4 which is encompassed by the surrounding edge 35 of the groove 34 accommodating the sealing disc 4, in which arrangement the sealing disc 4 as well as the surrounding edge 35 of the groove 34 come into attachment with the valve seat 61 of the housing 6. 1000151 The head piece I consists of a symmetrical hollow body both of whose front faces are open. On its side directed towards the housing 6, the head piece has a sleeve-like part 11. A stop 12 defining the inner circumference is integrally formed at the part I for attachment of the valve body 3. At its end directed towards the housing 6, the head piece I is externally provided with a connecting thread 13. The head piece 1 is screwable into the housing 6 of the armature by means of the connecting thread 13. 1000161 After the head piece I has been screwed into the housing 6, a screw collar 14 of the head piece I rests on the housing 6 of the armature. The screw collar 14 has, on its side directed towards the connecting thread 13, an annular groove 15 to accommodate the O-ring 71. The screwing process into the armature is achieved by means of an external multi-edged shape 16 which is provided on the side of the screw collar 14 which is directed away from the connecting thread 13. This part of the head piece I can be provided on the outside - as is shown - with an additional thread 17 for the reception of a sleeve - not shown. At the height of the screw collar 14 and the thread 17, the sleeve-like part I I of the head piece I is internally provided with an internal hexagon 18.
-4 1000171 The spindle 2 is essentially of solid body design. At its side directed away from the head piece 1 it has externally a multi-edged design 21 and internally it is provided with a blind hole 22 with internal thread for fastening a twist grip - not shown. Then, on the outside of the spindle 2, a cylindrical surface 23 is provided with which the spindle 2 is radially guided in the head piece 1. An annular groove 24 is formed into the cylindrical surface to receive an O-ring 72. The 0-ring 72 seals the spindle 2 against the head piece 1. An insertion 25 is provided between the cylindrical surface 23 and the external multi-edged design 21 into which a spindle fastening means 73 in the form of a compression spring is resiliently mounted. The spindle fastening 73 prevents the penetration of the spindle 2 into the head piece I beyond the predetermined position. 1000181 The spindle 2 is rotatable within the head piece 1. On its side opposite the external multi- edge 21, the spindle 2 has an external thread 26. Above the external thread 26 there is a screw collar 27 integrally formed. 1000191 The valve body 3 has a hollow cylindrical part 31 which is connected with a valve plug 33 via a frusto conical section 32. 1000201 Concentric to the rotational axis of the spindle 32, a groove 34 is formed into the valve plug 33 to accommodate the sealing disc 4. The groove 34 is externally bounded by a surrounding edge 35. Towards the inside, the groove 34 is bounded by a pin 36 integrally formed on the valve plug 33 on the rotation axis of the spindle 2 which, above the groove 34, is provided with an external thread 37. At its end directed away from the valve plug 33 an external hexagon 38 is integrally formed to the hollow cylindrical part 31. The external hexagon 38 serves as antirotation lock of the valve body 3 within the head piece 1. On the inside, the hollow cylindrical part 31 is provided with an internal thread 39. 1000211 The sealing disc 4 is of circular design, wherein the outer diameter of the sealing disc 4 substantially corresponds with the inner diameter of the surrounding edge 35 of groove 34. The disc 4 has a centrally located bore 41. Here, the diameter of the bore 41 is selected to be slightly greater than the outer diameter of the pin 36 of the valve plug 33 within the region of the groove 34 accommodating the disc 4. The sealing disc 4 is fixed within the groove 34 via a domed cap screw 5 which is screwed onto the external thread 37 of the pin 36.
-5 1000221 The valve body 3 is inserted into the head piece I in such a manner that the external hexagon 38 of the valve body 3 bears against the internal hexagon 18 of the head piece 1, whereby the valve body 3 is securely locked against rotation within the head piece 1. The external thread 26 of the spindle 2 is screwed into the internal thread 39 of the valve body 3, whereby the spindle 2 is axially fixed within the head piece I via the spindle fastening means 73. A rotation of the spindle 2 therefore results in an axial movement of the valve body 3 within the head piece 1. This axial movement of the valve body 3 is restricted by the stop 12 of the head piece I which, in the end position, is brought into abutment with the upper section 37 of the valve body 3 directed towards it with the thread 17. Below the internal thread 39 there is a grease chamber 3 11 arranged within the hollow cylindrical part 31. The grease chamber 311 serves to safeguard the engagement between the internal thread 39 of the hollow cylindrical part and the external thread 26 of the spindle 2. 1000231 In the assembled state of the valve top, the surrounding edge 35 of the valve plug 33 abuts the valve seat 61 of the housing 6 when in the opposite end position of the valve body 3. In this arrangement, the sealing disc 4 is pressed against the valve seat 61 by a defined force which results from the elasticity of the material of the sealing disc 4 and the projection of the sealing disc 4 beyond the surrounding edge 35 in open valve position. The surrounding edge 35 of the valve plug 33 at the same time serves as stop, so that an excessive pressing of the sealing disc 4 against the valve seat 61 is prevented. 1000241 The reference in this specification to any prior publication (or information derived from it), or to any matter which is known, is not, and should not be taken as, an acknowledgement or admission or any form of suggestion that that prior publication (or information derived from it) or known matter forms part of the common general knowledge in the field of endeavour to which this specification relates.
