Description
Specification of Biminne II Applicants: Guorang Hu, Wangcheng Hu, G & W Aust Pty Ltd Country: Australia Application: Australian Innovation Patent Title: Herbal compositions and uses for the treatment of skin allergic reactions Field of Innovation The present innovation relates generally to a composition for the treatment or prophylaxis of allergic and inflammatory skin reactions such as but not limited to skin allergies, eczema, and psoriasis in mammals. More particularly, the present innovation is directed to compositions comprising herbs or extracts of herbs or botanical or horticultural equivalents of the herbs or chemicals or functional equivalents of the herbal extracts useful in the treatment or prophylaxis of allergic and inflammatory skin reactions such as but not limited to skin allergies, eczema, and psoriasis. The present innovation further contemplates a method of treating allergic and inflammatory skin disorders in mammals by the administration of a herbal composition or its chemical or functional equivalents. Background of the Innovation Herbal formulations comprising extracts of more than one herbal plant have been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Use of herbal formulations is a major principle in the utilization of herbs in the management of diseases. There is now an increasing acceptance of their value and therapeutic efficacy in Western medicine. TCM has its unique and philosophical theory in etiology, diagnosis, pharmacology and therapeutics. Many concepts surrounding TCM have particular relevance to Western medicine such as viewing parts of the body as an organic whole, considering inter-relations and influences between organs and being aware of relevant adaptation of the human body to the natural environment. One of the applicants of this application has held an relevant invention of a herbal formulation 'Biminne and its uses titled "Herbal compositions and uses for the treatment of allergic reactions". Patents for this invention have been granted in Australia (764089), the U.S. (US 6814985 BI), China (ZL 00 8 05718.4), and Singapore (83359). Publications in leading international medical journals are: (1) Hu GR, Walls RS, Bass D, et al. The Chinese herbal formulation Biminne in management of perennial allergic rhinitis - a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12-week clinical trial. Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol 2002; 88: 478-487; (2) Hu GR and Walls RS: Traditional Chinese Medicine in the management of allergic diseases. Allergy Clin Immunol Int - J World Allergy Org 2005; 17(3): 88-96. However, this patented invention generally relates to allergic and inflammatory reactions in respiratory disorders, does not particularly cover the treatment of skin allergies and inflammation. Furthermore, in work leading up to the present innovation, the inventors identified previously a herbal formulation Biminne which was shown in randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-grouped clinical trials to be effective in the treatment of allergic and inflammatory reactions in mammals. A particular formulation - Biminne II is developed based on the Biminne formulation plus six herbs particularly for the treatment of allergies and inflammation in skin diseases.
Summary of the innovation One aspect of the present innovation provides a composition comprising herbs or extracts of herbs or botanical or horticultural equivalents of herbs or chemical or functional equivalents of the extract wherein said composition is effective in the prophylaxis and treatment of skin allergic or inflammatory responses. A further aspect of the present innovation provides a composition comprises five or more herbs or extracts of five or more herbs selected from the list comprising: Huangqin Scutellaria baicalensis root Huangqi Astragalus membranaceus root Ginkgo Ginkgo biloba leaf Digupi Lycium chinense root Yinyanghuo Epimedium sagittatum leaf Chishao Paeonia lactiflora root Wuweizi Schizandra chinensis fruit Mudanpi Paeonia suffruticosa root Fangfeng Ledebouriella divaricata root Dihuang Rehmannia glutinosa rhizome Wumei Prunus mume fruit Gancao Glycyrrhiza uralensis root Buguzhi Psoralea corylifolia fruit Kushen Sophora angustifolia root Baizhi Angelica dahurca root Huangjin Polygonatum sibiricum rhizome Another aspect of the present innovation contemplates a method for the treatment or prophylaxis of a skin allergic or inflammatory reaction such as but not limited to skin allergies, eczema, and psoriasis in mammals, and the said method comprising administering an effective amount of the composition as hereinbefore described for a time and under conditions sufficient to treat or prevent said skin allergic or inflammatory reactions.
Detailed description of the preferred embodiments In a most preferred embodiment, the composition comprises the following herbs or extracts thereof in approximate percentage amounts shown in parentheses: Name Ingredient Amount Information (%, W/W) Scutellaria baicalensis, Huangqin Froot, Dry [ 5-50 Lycium chinense, Digupi root bark, Dry [ 5-20 Epimedium sagittatum, Yinyanghuo leaf, Dry 5-50 Paeonia lactiflora, Chishao root, Dry 5-20 Schizandra chinensis, Wuweizi fruit, Dry 5-30 Paeonia suffruticosa, Mudanpi root bark, Dry 5-20 Ledebouriella divaricate, Fangfeng root, Dry 5-20 Rehmannia glutinosa, Dihuang rhizome, Dry [ 5-30 Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Gancao root, Dry 2-15 Astragalus membranaceus, Huangqi root, Dry 5-50 Ginkgo biloba, Yinxingye leaf, Dry 5-20 Prunus mume, Wumei fruit flesh, Dry [ 2-20 Psoralea corylifolia, Buguzhi fruit, Dry 5-20 Sophora angustifolia, Kushen root, Dry [ 5-20 Angelica dahurca, Baizhi Root, Dry [ 5-20 Polygonatum sibiricum, Huangjin Rhizome, Dry [ 5-20 The compositions of the present innovation may also comprise one or more pharmacologically acceptable carriers and/or diluents. Such carriers and/or diluents include any and all solvents, water, dispersion media, coatings, antibacterial and antifungal agents, isotonic and absorption delaying agents and the like. Preferably, the diluent is water or a water or alcohol based extraction of the herbs. The composition may be in the form of capsules, tablets, buccal tablets, troches, elixirs, suspensions, syrups, wafers and the like. They may also be in a form which may be inhaled or given by nasal spray, aerosol droplets or vapour infusion. Particularly important allergic and inflammatory conditions to treat are skin allergies, eczema, and psoriases. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the herbs are contained and subject to conventional extraction techniques. Such techniques include water extraction, solvent extraction, alcohol extraction and/or acid or base extraction. The resulting extract is then preferably incorporated into a capsule. Mammals contemplated herein include humans, primates, laboratory test animals (eg. mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters), livestock animals (eg. Cows, sheep, horses, pigs ), companion animals (eg. dogs, cats) or captive wild animals. Preferably, the mammal is a human.
Preferably, the compositions are provided orally such as in capsule, where multiple capsules are consumed hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. Example The Biminne II herbal formulation comprises extracts from sixteen herbs. The herbs employed and their percentage amounts are shown in Table 1.
