Description

1 Description Specification of PainGo Spray Applicants: Guorang Hu and Wangcheng Hu Country: Australia Application: Australian Innovation Patent Title: Herbal compositions and topical uses for relief of arthritic pain and joint inflammation Field of Innovation The present innovation relates generally to a composition for reducing arthritic pain and joint inflammation, such as but not limited to providing temporary relief of the pain of arthritis, reducing joint inflammation and swelling associated with arthritis, relief of muscular aches, and assistance in the management of sports injuries and peripheral circulation in mammals. More particularly, the present innovation is directed to compositions comprising herbs or extracts of herbs or botanical or horticultural equivalents of the herbs or chemical or functional equivalents of the herbal extracts useful for the relief of arthritic pain and joint inflammation, such as but not limited to providing temporary relief of the pain of arthritis, reducing joint inflammation and swelling associated with arthritis, relief of muscular aches, and assistance in the management of sports injuries and peripheral circulation in mammals. The present innovation further contemplates a method of topical use in mammals by administration of a herbal composition or its chemical or functional equivalent. Background of the Innovation Herbal formulations comprising extracts of more than one herbal plant have been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Use of herbal formulations is a major principle in the utilization of herbs in the management of diseases. There is now an increasing acceptance of their value and therapeutic efficacy in Western medicine. TCM has its unique and philosophical theory in etiology, diagnosis, pharmacology and therapeutics. Many concepts surrounding TCM have particular relevance to Western medicine such as viewing parts of the body as an organic whole, considering inter-relations and influences between organs and being aware of relevant adaptation of the human body to the natural environment. As such, integration of ancient wisdom and modern sciences in herbal formulations has become a valuable approach to the reesearch and development of useful herbal formulations in the management of sub-optimal and chronic health conditions. Both applicants of this Innovation are senior medical doctors and have long been practising TCM and are experienced in the treatment of the age-related and sub-optimal health disorders. One of the applicants of this Innovation Dr. GR Hu has twenty years of research study experiences at the University of Sydney and more than 39 years of clinical practice in herbal medicines, and also been granted PhD in medicine in TCM clinical research at the Department of Medicine, Sydney University. Combined with the latest scientific findings and modern pharmaceutical technology, the applicants have developed a series of leading edge herbal medications in the fields of ageing, allergies, arthritis, and regulation of sugar and cholesterol, in which one has been internationally patented in the US, Singapore, 2 China and Australia, another three have been granted Innovation patents. Now a new formulation for the relief of arthritic pain and joint inflammation in mammals have been developed, and lead up to the present innovation. This Innovation is developed upon a latest scientifically formulated herbal formulation by the applicants for the relief of joint, bone and musculoskeletal related conditions. Traditional and scientific evidence has shown that the active ingredients in PainGo Spray have anti-inflammatory, circulation enhancing and pain relieving properties. These attributes provide assistance in the management of osteoarthritis, rhimatoid arthritis, rhimatism, sporting injuries, lower back pain, and muscular aches. Summary of the innovation One aspect of the present innovation provides a composition comprising herbs or extracts of herbs or botanical or horticultural equivalents of herbs or chemical or functional equivalents of the extract wherein said composition is effective for the relief of arthritic pain and joint inflammation in mammals. A further aspect of the present innovation provides a composition comprises four or more herbs or extracts of four or more herbs selected from the list comprising: Paeonia suffruticosa root bark Ligusticum wallichii rhizome Zingiber officinale rhizome Panax notoginseng herb Angelica pubescens root Paeonia Lactiflora root Arnica Montana flower Another aspect of the present innovation contemplates a method of topical use in mammals by administration of a herbal composition or its chemical or functional equivalent for the relief of arthritic pain and joint inflammation, such as but not limited to providing temporary relief of the pain of arthritis, reducing joint inflammation and swelling associated with arthritis, relief of muscular aches, and assistance in the management of sports injuries and peripheral circulation in mammals, and the said method comprising administering an effective amount of the composition as hereinbefore described for a time and under conditions sufficient for the relief of arthritic pain and joint inflammation. Detailed description of the preferred embodiments In a most preferred embodiment, the composition comprises the following herbs or extracts thereof in approximate percentage amounts shown in parentheses: 3 Name Ingredient Information Amount (%, W/W) Paeonia suffruticosa Root bark, Dry 5-50 Ligusticum wallichii Rhizome, Dry 5-30 Zingiber officinale Rhizome, Dry 5-30 Panax notoginseng Herb, Dry 5-30 Angelica pubescens Root, Dry 2-20 Paeonia Lactiflora Root, Dry 1-10 Arnica Montana Flower, Dry 1-10 The compositions of the present innovation may also comprise one or more pharmacologically acceptable carriers and/or diluents. Such carriers and/or diluents include any and all solvents, water, dispersion media, coatings, antibacterial and antifungal agents, isotonic and absorption or penetration enhancing agents and the like. Preferably, the diluent is water or a water or alcohol based extraction of the herbs. The composition may be in the form of spray, capsules, tablets, buccal tablets, troches, elixirs, suspensions, syrups, wafers, plaster, cream and the like. They may also be in a form which may be inhaled or given by nasal spray, aerosol droplets or vapour infusion. Particularly important conditions to treat are arthritic pain, joint inflammation, bone and musculoskeletal related aches and sports injuries. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the herbs are contained and subject to conventional extraction techniques. Such techniques include water extraction, solvent extraction, alcohol extraction and/or acid or base extraction. The resulting extract is then preferably incorporated into a spray can. Mammals contemplated herein include humans, primates, laboratory test animals (eg. mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters), livestock animals 4 (eg. cows, sheep, horses, pigs), companion animals (eg. dogs, cats) or captive wild animals.
