Description

Specification of CholeSol Field of Innovation The present innovation relates generally to a composition for maintaining normal healthy cholesterol levels, supporting a healthy ratio of HDL/LDL, as well as enhancing general health in aging, such as but not limited to the benefits of regulating _blood lipid, reducing intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol, promoting the metabolism of cholesterol, and also providing antioxidants, which help eliminate excess oxidants from the body, and help maintain healthy immune function, thus Senhancing general health in aging in mammals. More particularly, the present innovation is directed to compositions comprising herbs or extracts of herbs or botanical or horticultural equivalents of the herbs or chemicals or functional equivalents of the herbal extracts useful in maintaining normal healthy cholesterol levels, supporting a healthy ratio of HDL/LDL, as well as enhancing general health in aging, such as but not limited to the benefits of regulating blood lipid, reducing intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol, promoting the metabolism of cholesterol, and also providing antioxidants, which help eliminate excess oxidants from the body, and help maintain healthy immune function, thus enhancing general health in aging in mammals. The present innovation further contemplates a method of regulating cholesterol levels in mammals by administration of a herbal composition or its chemical or functional equivalent.
Background of the Innovation Herbal formulations comprising extracts of more than one herbal plant have been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Use of herbal formulations is a major principle in the utilization of herbs in the management of diseases. There is now an increasing acceptance of their value and therapeutic efficacy in Western medicine. TCM has its unique and philosophical theory in etiology, diagnosis, pharmacology and therapeutics. Many concepts surrounding TCM have particular relevance to Western medicine such as viewing parts of the body as an organic whole, considering inter-relations and influences between organs and being aware of relevant 0 o adaptation of the human body to the natural environment.
0Both applicants of this Innovation are senior medical doctors and have long been practising TCM and are experienced in treating the age-related and sub-optimal disorders. One of the applicants of this Innovation Dr. GR Hu also conducted clinical studies in geriatric medicine with an anti-aging herbal formulation at Huashan Hospital a teaching hospital of Shanghai Medical University 25 years ago while he owas the Deputy Director of the Department of TCM of the Hospital.
O In his current twenty years of research studies at the University of Sydney and clinical practice in herbal medicines, Dr. GR Hu has continued studies in aging, allergy and immunology, and been granted PhD in medicine in TCM herbal research. Combined with the latest scientific findings and modern pharmaceutical technology, the applicants have developed a new formulation for regulating blood lipids and maintaining better health in aging, and lead up to the present innovation.
Summary of the innovation One aspect of the present innovation provides a composition comprising herbs or extracts of herbs or botanical or horticultural equivalents of herbs or chemical or functional equivalents of the extracts wherein said composition is effective and useful in maintaining normal healthy cholesterol levels, supporting a healthy ratio of HDL/LDL, as well as enhancing general health in aging, such as but not limited to the benefits of regulating blood lipid, reducing intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol, promoting the metabolism of cholesterol, and also providing antioxidants, which help eliminate excess oxidants from the body, and help maintain healthy immune function, thus enhancing general health in aging in mammals.
A further aspect of the present innovation provides a composition comprises four or more herbs or extracts of four or more herbs selected from the list comprising: Curcuma longa rhizome Camellia sinensis leaf oSugar cane wax alcohols oPolygonum cuspidatum root Ganoderma lucidum herb Ginkgo biloba leaf Lycium barbarum fruit Crataegus cuneata fruit Another aspect of the present innovation contemplates a method for regulating cholesterol levels and enhancing general health in aging in mammals by Sadministration of a herbal composition or its chemical or functional equivalent, and the said method comprising administering an effective amount of the composition as hereinbefore described for a time and under conditions sufficient for regulating cholesterol levels and enhancing general health in aging.
Detailed description of the preferred embodiments In a most preferred embodiment, the composition comprises the following herbs or extracts thereof in approximate percentage amounts shown in parentheses: Name Ingredient Information Amount
W/W)
Curcuma longa rhizome, dry 5-50 Camellia sinensis leaf, dry 5-50 Sugar cane wax alcohol Sugar cane wax extracts, dry 5-20 0 oPolygonum cuspidatum o root, dry 05-50 Ganoderma lucidum herb, dry 5-30 Va Ginkgo biloba oleaf, dry 5-20 oLycium barbarum fruit, dry 5-20 Crataegus cuneata fruit, dry 5-20 The compositions of the present innovation may also comprise one or more pharmacologically acceptable carriers and/or diluents. Such carriers and/or diluents include any and all solvents, water, dispersion media, coatings, antibacterial and antifungal agents, isotonic and absorption delaying agents and the like. Preferably, the diluent is water or a water or alcohol based extraction of the herbs.
The composition may be in the form of capsules, tablets, buccal tablets, troches, elixirs, suspensions, syrups, wafers and the like. They may also be in a form which may be inhaled or given by nasal spray, aerosol droplets or vapour infusion.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the herbs are contained and subject to conventional extraction techniques. Such techniques include water extraction, solvent extraction, alcohol extraction and/or acid or base extraction. The resulting extract is then preferably incorporated into a capsule.
Mammals contemplated herein include humans, primates, laboratory test animals (eg.
O
Smice, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters), livestock animals (eg. cows, sheep, horses, r pigs), companion animals (eg. dogs, cats) or captive wild animals.
Preferably, the mammal is a human.
Preferably, the compositions are provided orally such as in capsule, where multiple capsules are consumed hourly, daily, weekly or monthly.
SExamplel The CholeSol herbal formulation comprises extracts from eight herbs. The herbs employed and their percentage amounts are shown in Table 1.
Table 1 CholeSol herbal formulation Herb Ingredient information Amount (w/w) Curcuma longa rhizome, dry 16.9 Camellia sinensis leaf, dry 37.8 Sugar cane wax alcohol Sugar cane wax extracts, dry Polygonum cuspidatum root, dry 9.6 Ganoderma lucidum O herb, dry 0 SGinkgo biloba leaf, dry 5.1 Lycium barbarum fruit, dry 12.8 Crataegus cuneata Sfruit, dry 8.3 Example 2 Herbal extraction techniques were performed according to standard protocols and were designed to maintain maximal levels of active components. Extracts of the eight herbs listed in Table 1 were formulated into a traditional Chinese medicine CholeSol capsule.
