Description

Editorial Note for 2009101249 There are 3 pages of description A SUBSTANTIALLY ODOURLESS FERTILIZER MADE FROM ORGANIC WASTE As populations have increased, nearby intensive livestock production has also increased to help feed the population, which results in a corresponding increase in the combined organic waste streams. Initially these waste streams were recycled back into the soil on nearby lands from where the food was originally grown, thus completing and closing the lifecycle. But today the food for intensive livestock raising and human consumption is often transported some hundreds and sometimes thousands of kilometres from where it is grown, resulting in a concentration of organic waste that when applied onto nearby lands soon saturates and overloads the soil with nutrients, polluting the soil, water and air. As well, the odours created by these intensive animal industries, reduce livestock performance and health as well as creating more environmental problems. The invention described herein is a method for converting various organic waste streams into a substantially odourless and low leaching fertilizer. Today there are many successful ways in which these organic waste streams are processed to achieve social, economic and environmentally acceptable outcomes. The present invention relates to the production of a substantially odourless fertilizer, by mixing and working organic waste streams with organic odour reducing agents to form a free-flowing, pelleted or granular fertilizer, with moisture content between 7-15%, that is safe to handle, environmentally friendly and easy to transport and apply. The present invention reduces offensive odours and toxicity within the intensive livestock housing or growing facilities. This is achieved by spreading or mixing the odour reducing agents consisting essentially of 1-60% Biochar by weight, of the manure, bedding or litter. The Biochar has a particle size < 10 mm and having a surface area > 100 m 2 /g, plus the uniform addition of 0.2-15% Pyroligneous acid by (Weight of the manure, bedding or litter. The present invention substantially mixes and works the odour reducing agents consisting essentially of 1-60% Biochar by weight, of the manure, bedding or litter. The Biochar has a particle size < 10 mm and having a surface area > 100 m 2 /g, plus the uniform addition of 0.2-15% Pyroligneous acid by weight of the manure, bedding or litter. Mixing in of the odour reducing agents may occur at any stage/s during the composting, storage and the processing of the animal manures, bedding and litter, municipal bio-solids, and food waste. In this way the nitrogen losses are reduced by up to 70%, as well as reducing the plant availability of some heavy metals such as copper and zinc in the process of producing a substantially odourless fertilizer.
The present invention substantially improves the health of the animals by reducing the free ammonia levels in intensive animal production facilities, by mixing the odour reducing agents consisting essentially of 1-60% Biochar by weight, of the manure, bedding or litter. The Biochar has a particle size < 10 mm and having a surface area > 100 m 2 /g, plus the uniform addition of 0.2-15% Pyroligneous acid by weight of the manure, bedding or litter, in the process of producing a substantially odourless fertilizer. The present invention substantially improves the health of the animals when the odour reducing agents are mixed in a ratio of about 3:1 to 5:1 w/w (Biochar: Pyroligneous acid) and added into the animals feed ration at between 1-4% by weight of the total feed ration, in the process of producing a substantially odourless fertilizer.

Claims (3)

1. A process for producing a substantially odourless fertilizer, comprising: animal manures from intensive livestock facilities, municipal bio-solids and/or food waste, are substantially mixed with the odour reducing agents, consisting essentially of 1-60% Biochar by weight, of the waste stream. The Biochar has a particle size < 10 mm and having a surface area > 100 m 2 /g, plus the uniform addition of 0.2-15% Pyroligneous acid by weight of the waste stream. Mixing in of the odour reducing agents may occur at any stage/s during the composting, storage and the processing of the animal manures, bedding and litters, municipal bio-solids, and food waste. The fertilizer is then dried to a free-flowing, pelletized or granulated form with 7 14% moisture, by weight.
2. The process of claim 1 wherein: the said odour reducing agents are applied to the surface or mixed into the bedding or litter at 1-60% Biochar by weight, of the manure, bedding or litter. The Biochar has a particle size < 10 mm and having a surface area > 100 m 2 /g, plus the uniform addition of 0.2-15% Pyroligneous acid by weight of the manure, bedding or litter.
3. The process of claim 1 further include: the addition of the said odour reducing agents are substantially mixed in a ratio of about 3:1 to 5:1 w/w (Biochar: Pyroligneous acid) and added into the animals feed ration at between 1-4% by weight of the total feed ration.
