FIELD
SThe present disclosure relates to a building module and a method of erecting buildings using a prefabricated building module.
0 BACKGROUND
ART
C- 5 In this specification unless the contrary is expressly stated, where a document, 00 Sact or item of knowledge is referred to or discussed, this reference or discussion C-I is not to be construed as an admission that the document, act or item of knowledge or any combination thereof was at the priority date, publicly available, known to the public, part of common general knowledge; or known to be relevant to an attempt to solve any problem with which this specification is concerned Various attempts have been made to provide prefabricated building modules that can be transported to a building site in a flat or approximately flat condition, and then erected.
United States Patent US 3,494,092 to Johnson discloses one such module, where the wall panels are connected via hinges to and depend from a ceiling panel. However the nature of the hinges that connect the wall panels to the ceiling panel dictate that the wall panels must extend outwardly from the ceiling panel when the module is laid flat. This creates transport problems, as the flattened modules have a large footprint, and they are substantially longer that a semi trailer is wide along even their shortest side.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a building module that substantially ameliorates the aforementioned difficulties associated with the building modules of the prior art, or which at the least provides the public with a useful alternative to these- COMS ID No: ARCS-190028 Received by IP Australia: Time 16:08 Date 2008-05-09 09/05 2008 16:31 FAX 8182311273 COLLISON IP AUSTRALIA R01/038 00 3 0 Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein, by way of illustration and example, an embodiment of the 0 present invention is disclosed.

IP AUSTRALtIA Z 022/038 00 0 7 Figures 3 through 7 are perspective views of the exemplary building module in Figure 1, illustrating the wall panels being swung up into an erected position; and 0 Figures 8 through 10 are detailed views of the pivotal attachment means 00 5 illustrating a wall panel being swung up into an erected position.
0 o DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION 00 SReferring now to the illustrations, and in particular to Figure 1, where there is c illustrated a building module 1, having a rectangular base panel 2 with a wall panel 4 pivotally attached to each edge thereof via pivotal attachment means.
The shorter side of the base (dimension A) may be approximately the same width as a trailer of a semi-trailer truck. This facilitates transportation via this means.
It would be understood by a person skilled in the relevant art however, that the dimension of the base panel 2 may be varied according to the means of transportation available.
Here the module 1 is shown is the flat packed condition, which is convenient for transportation of the module 1. Each wall 4 is folded inwardly with respect to the base 2 panel, so that the wall panels 4 are stacked one atop the other atop of the base panel 2. In this case the two end walls are at the bottom of the stack, and the two sidewalls are stacked atop of them.
The wall panels 4 include openings for windows 5 and doors 7, as required.
Referring now to Figure 4, the base 2 and wall panels 4 each have a steel frame 10 that is assembled from a series of steel channel frame members.
These frames 10 are comprised of a series of vertical frame members, or studs 12, which are approximately equi-spaced and running parallel to each other COMS ID No: ARCS-190028 Received by IP Australia: Time 16:08 Date 2008-05-09 09/05 2008 16:31 FAX 6182311273 CLIO PASRLA Ij2/3

IP AUSTRALIA 1a023/V38 00 along the length of the panel, and at least two of which are edge-forming studs.
There is a horizontal frame member, or noggin 14 running along the top and bottom edges of the frame 10. The flanges 1 4a of these nogginis 14 overlap the o flanges 12a on the studs 12.
en s A series of floor posts 20 are pivotally attached to the frame 22 of the base 00 o panel 2. These can be swung from a retracted position relative to the frame 22, o and into an extended position relative to the frame 22 (see Figures 2 and in 00 which they are then fixed by fasteners etc.
Referring now to Figures 8 through 10, the pivotal attachment means that pivotally connects the base 2 and wall modules 4 includes a first leaf attached to the base panel 2, so that the first leaf 30 projects upwards from the base panel 2. This first leaf 30 is a length of steel plate 32, which has a pin projecting 34 therefrom.
The second leaf 36 is attached to the frame of a wall panel 4 and incorporates a slot 38 that retains the pin 34.
In practice, the second leaf 36 is a length of rectangular hollow section (FIHS) steer 40 that forms part of the wall panel 4- This length of RHS 30 is fixed to one of the panels' studs 12 at its lowermost end, and it has a slot 42 through its end that extends up the sides of a first pair of its sides. This first slot also extends through the lowermost noggin 14, and provides clearance for the first leaf There is a second slot 38 in the other pair of opposing faces in the length of RHS. The pin 34 that projects from the first leaf 30 is retained in this slot 38.
Each wall panel is retained to the base by at least two such pivotal attachment means. The length of each first leaf 30 is the same for any one wall panel, but the lengths of these leaves differs from one wall panel to the next (see Figure This is because the length of these leaves 30 dictates the folding order of COMS ID No: ARCS-190028 Received by IP Australia: lime 16:08 Date 2008-05-09 09/05 2008 16:31 FAX 6182311273 COLLISON IP USTRALIA 024038 00 0 9 the wall panels 4. The panel retained by the pivotal attachment means with the longest leaf will be the uppermost panel in the stack (see Figure the wall panel with the next longest leaf will be the next panel in the stack, and so on.
0 In use, the flat folded module 1 is lifted from the trailer of a semi trailer via a t' 5 crane. Whilst it is suspended from the crane, the floor posts 20 are extended 00 o and fixed in position, and the module is lowered onto pre-prepared footings 00 The uppermost wall panel is then swung upright. As it approaches the vertical Sposition the wall panel will move downward with respect to the pin 34, until the wall panels' lowermost noggin 14 sits atop the base panel.
The wall panel can then be bolted through the lowermost noggin 14 to the base panel 2.
The next uppermost wall pane is then swung upright, followed by the next uppermost wall panel, followed by the lowermost wall panel.
Contiguous pairs of wall panels can then be fixed one to the other using fasteners etc.
The erected walls are adapted to support roof trusses (not shown) atop their uppermost noggins 14. These roof trusses are fixed to the wall panels 4 via fasteners etc. These roofing trusses can then be clad with roofing material, and doors and windows can be fitted into appropriate openings 5 and 7 in the wall panels 4 as required. Alternatively, the roof trusses can be pre-clad and fitted with roofing materiel before the trusses are fixed to the wall panels, and the windows pre-fitted into the wall frames prior to transportation to the building site.
If required, a similar module, or indeed multiple modules can be position adjacent the first module so as to form a building having two or more rooms.
