Description

CABLE CLAMPS This invention relates to cable clamps. The invention has particular application to cable clamps for use with metal cables, especially steel cables but may also have application to cables made of other metals as well as those made of plastics or other non-metals. In one aspect, the invention resides broadly in a cable clamp, including: a body having a first passage extending therethrough and a second passage extending at least partially therethrough, said first and second passages being adapted to receive respective portions of a cable to be clamped and the axes of said first and second passages being substantially in the same plane, and a third passage extending therein laterally to the plane containing the axes of said first and second passages and communicating with said first and second passages, said third passage being threaded and adapted to screwthreadedly receive therein a complementary screw threaded fastener adapted to encroach on said first and second passages when screwed into said third passage; and a screw threaded fastener screwed into said third passage. In another aspect, the invention resides broadly in a component for a cable clamp, including: a body having a first passage extending therethrough and a second passage extending at least partially therethrough, said 5 first and second passages being adapted to receive respective portions of a cable to be clamped and the axes of said first and second passages being substantially in the same plane, and a third passage extending therein laterally to the plane containing the axes of said first and second passages and communicating with 0 said first and second passages, said third passage being threaded and adapted to screwthreadedly receive therein a complementary /cKOE01135.doc filed 17 July 2007 2 screw threaded fastener adapted to encroach on said first and second passages when screwed therein. In another aspect, the invention resides broadly in a kit of parts for a cable clamp, including: a body having a first passage extending therethrough and a second passage extending at least partially therethrough, said first and second passages being adapted to receive respective portions of a cable to be clamped and the axes of said first and second passages being substantially in the same plane, and a third passage extending therein laterally to the plane containing the axes of said first and second passages and communicating with said first and second passages, said third passage being threaded and adapted to screwthreadedly receive therein a complementary screw threaded fastener adapted to encroach on said first and second passages when screwed therein; and a screw threaded fastener adapted to be screwed into said third passage. Preferably, said third passage extends into said body generally perpendicular to the plane containing the axes of said first and second passages. Preferably, said third passage extends through said body so as to provide for separate fasteners to be fitted from the opposite sides of the body. Preferably, a fourth passage spaced from said third passage 5 also extends into said body so as to communicate with said first and second passages and is screw threaded to receive a complementary screw threaded fastener adapted to encroach on said first and second passages in the same manner as with the case of the third passage. It is also preferred that the fourth passage o extend fully through the body so as to provide for two fasteners therein from opposite sides of the body as with the third /cKOE01135.docfiled 17 July 2007 3 passage. If desired, additional similar passages may be provided to achieve greater security. Preferably, said second passage also extends fully through said body whereby cables or respective portions of cables may 5 pass therethrough to allow the clamp to be used for forming an end loop on a single cable or for joining two cables. In a preferred form the first and second passages are separated by a portion of the body forming a wall therebetween. In such form, it is preferred that the first and second passages ) be cylindrical and of circular cross section although in some forms spaced apart ribs or grooves may be provided along their lengths. Such ribs or grooves may be longitudinal, circumferential or spiral as desired for a particular application. It is also preferred that the first and second 5 passages have a diameter only slightly greater than the diameter of the cable to be clamped and that the fasteners and their respective passages also be selected such that the fasteners are effective to force the side by side cable portions into engagement with the respective cylindrical faces of the first and 3 second passages when screwed into their respective screw threaded passages. However, in another form of the invention, the passages meet along their common length through the body to effectively create a single passage adapted to receive therein two cables or two cable portions side by side. Thus, in another aspect, the 5 invention resides broadly in a component for a cable clamp, including: a body having a first passage extending therethrough in one direction and adapted to receive therein side by side and in contact respective portions of a cable or cables to be clamped, 30 the width of said first passage in one direction being equal to or slightly greater than the diameter of the cable to be clamped and the width in a perpendicular direction being equal to or /cKOE01J35.docfiled I 7 July 2007 4 slightly greater than twice the diameter of the cable to be clamped, and another passage extending into the body laterally to the plane containing the axis of said first passage and communicating therewith, said other passage being threaded and adapted to screwthreadedly receive therein a complementary screw threaded fastener adapted to encroach on said first passage when screwed therein. In order that the invention may be more easily understood and put into practical effect, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a pictorial representation of a cable clamp according to the invention without grub screws; Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the cable clamp of Fig.1; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a grub screw component of the clamp of Fig. 1 Fig. 4 is an end elevation of another cable clamp according to the invention; Fig. 5 is an end elevation of yet another cable clamp ) according to the invention; and Fig. 6 is a pictorial representation of the cable clamp of Fig. 1 in use. The cable clamp component 010 illustrated in Fig. 1 has a cylindrical elongate body 11 with first and second parallel 5 cylindrical passages 12 and 13 extending therethrough and having their axes lying in a first diametral plane 15 passing through centre line 14. Spaced apart third and fourth passages 16 and 17 extend through the body having their axes in a second diametral plane 18 passing through centre line 19 which is orthogonal to 0 the first diametral plane and open at one end to the top of the body and at the other end to the bottom. The third and fourth passages are screw threaded along their respective lengths and /cKOE01135.docfiled 17 July 2007 5 each are adapted to receive therein two grub screws 21 from the top and bottom which suitably are Allen keyed for easy fitting and removal. As can be seen in Fig. 6, a cable can be passed through 5 either one of the first and second passages and turned through 180' to pass through the other of those passages to form a loop 23. In order to properly secure the cable four grub screws 21 may be screwed into the third and fourth passages (only one is shown in Fig. 6) to form clamp 30 in which the grub screws bind against ) the respective portions of the cable passing through the first and second passages. Suitably, the cable is only slightly smaller in diameter than the first and second passages so that the grub screws are effective to force the respective portions of the cables outwards so as to engage with the outer portion of the 5 respective cylindrical faces of the passages 12 and 13 while the grub screws themselves bind with the inner portion of the cables thereby securing them in the body. Advantageously, neither the free end nor the intermediate portion of the cable is able to move once the grub screws are in place. 3 The components represented by Figs. 4 and 5 are the same in side elevation as the clamp 10 illustrated in Fig. 1 and the only difference is that the centre lines of the first and second passages 12 and 13 are closer such that they meet along their common length to effectively form a single passage 26 in Fig. 4 5 or 27 in Fig. 5 which are adapted to receive therein two cables or two portions of cables in much the same manner as in Fig. 6. Suitably, the passage 26 in the cable clamp of Fig. 4 is semi circular at the extremity of its sides and rectangular in between while the passage 27 of the cable clamp of Fig. 5 is more fully 0 circular. The foregoing description has been given by way of illustrative example of the invention and many modifications and /cKOE0IJ35.docfiled 17 July 2007 6 variations which will be apparent to persons skilled in the art may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. /cKOE0113S.docjlled 17 July 2007
