The invention concerns drums with lids made from plastic material with a clamping ring made from metal to secure the lid of the drum on the upper edge of 0 the drum, whereby the clamping ring with the U-shaped cross-section engages in the locked state with its upper flank from above the edge of the lid and with its lower flank engages from below an annular contact surface of a border on the C casing of the drum, said contact surface extending vertically or inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the drum below the upper edge of the drum and representing the upper limit of a bend in the upper section of the casing of the drum, and whereby the edge of the lid, formed by an internal edge, an external edge and a connecting ring has a U-shaped cross-section open downward with a sealing bed to place or foam-in a lid seal, that in the closed position of the lid of the drum is pressed against the upper edge of the lid by the clamping force of the clamping ring.
In the case of drums with lids of this type, known from US 5 301 853, the sealing effect of the lid of the drum is achieved by an axial pretensioning of the lid seal provided on the upper edge of the drum, whereby the axial pretensioning is produced by the closing of the clamping ring over these two inclined flanks sliding over the edge of the lid and the border of the drum. On drums with lids, approved for the storage and transporting of dangerous liquids, certain requirements are placed with regard to the safety of their storage and transport, that are tested by the prescribed approval checks, subjecting the drums with lids to, inter alia, lateral fall on the casing, a diagonal fall on the edge of the lid, a static internal pressure test and a stacking load.
In the case of a drum with lid according to US 5 301 853 the required strength of the ring is achieved by a relatively great thickness of the sheet metal of the clamping ring, that in the case of a fall of the drum off the loading surface of a truck would prevent, for example, leakages of the lid of the drum and the snapping off of the lid of the drum when the drum falls from a greater height, due 0to the deformations of the clamping ring. A disadvantage of this known drum with lid is the weight of the clamping ring due to the relatively great thickness of the material of the ring and its high manufacturing cost.
The object of the invention is to further develop the generic type drum with lid with regard to the tightness of the lid should the drum fall from average and greater 00 C" heights.
S 10 This objective is achieved according to the invention by a drum with lid having the 0 0 features of patent claim 1.
The sub-claims contain advantageous and useful further developments of the invention.
The drum with lid from plastic material with a clamping ring from metal to secure the lid of the drum on the upper edge of the drum distinguishes itself from other known drums with lids by an increased strength in case of a fall as well as by a clamping ring with reduced material thickness, resulting in a reduction of the weight of the clamping ring and a reduced manufacturing cost of the clamping ring due to material saving.
Two embodiments of the drum with lid according to the invention are explained in the following based on the figures of the drawing, illustrating the following: Fig.1 a side view of the drum with lid, and the Figs.2 and 3 enlarged, cut-out illustrations of the top region of the drum with lid with two different embodiments of the clamping ring closure of the lid of the drum.
The drum 1 with lid, made from plastic material, comprises according to Fig.1 a drum casing 2, a bottom 3, a drum lid 4 as well as a clamping ring 5 made from metal to secure the lid 4 on the upper edge 6 of the drum.
SIn the case of both drum constructions, illustrated in Figs.2 and 3, the clamping Uring 5, having a U-shaped cross-section, engages from above with its upper flank 7 the edge 8 of the lid and with its lower flak 9 engages from below an annular contact surface 11 of a border 12 on the drum casing 2, said annular contact surface extending inclined relative to the longitudinal axis 10-10 of the drum and being situated below the upper edge 6 of the drum and representing the upper 00 C" limit of a bend 13 in the upper section of the drum casing 2. The edge 8 of the lid, formed by an internal edge 14, an external edge 15 and a connecting ring 16, has S 10 a U-shaped cross-section open downward with a sealing bed 17 to place or foam- 0 in a lid seal 18, that in the closed position of the lid 4 is pressed against the upper

edge 6 of the drum by the clamping force of the clamping ring In the case of the first embodiment of a clamping ring closure of the lid 4 of the drum, illustrated in Fig.2, an annular bead 20 is formed on the connecting flank 19 of the upper and lower flanks 7, 9 of the clamping ring 5, said annular bead facing radially inward and when the clamping ring 5 is closed it engages a meshing groove 21 formed in the external edge 15 of the lid 4 for the purpose of securing the lid on the upper edge 6 of the drum.
If the drum 1 with lid falls from a height on the edge 8 of the lid, the clamping ring is crushed and the annular bead 20 of the clamping ring is pressed into the meshing groove 21 in the external edge 15 of the edge 8 of the lid. The lid 4 of the drum is thus better secured in this manner on the edge 6 of the drum and consequently the drum's resistance to fall is increased, while the thickness of the material of the clamping ring can be reduced.
The second embodiment of a clamping ring closure of the lid 4 of the drum according to Fig.3 is characterised in that when the clamping ring 5 is closed the annular bead 20 provided on it for the securing of the lid 4 on the upper edge 6 of the drum engages a bottom holding ring 22 formed on the external edge 15 of the lid.
Claims (3)
1. A drum with lid made from plastic material with a clamping ring made from Smetal to secure the lid of the drum on the upper edge of the drum, whereby the Sclamping ring with the U-shaped cross-section engages in the locked state with 00 C* its upper flank from above the edge of the lid and with its lower flank engages -from below an annular contact surface of a border on the drum casing, said S 10 contact surface extending vertically or inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the drum below the upper edge of the drum and representing the upper limit of a bend in the upper section of the drum casing, and whereby the edge of the lid, formed by an internal edge, an external edge and a connecting ring has a U-shaped cross-section open downward with a sealing bed to place or foam-in a lid seal, that in the closed position of the lid of the drum is pressed against the upper edge of the lid by the clamping force of the clamping ring, characterised by an annular bead formed on the connecting flank of the upper and lower flanks of the clamping ring, said annular bead facing radially inward and when the clamping ring is closed it engages the external edge of the lid in a form-locking manner for the purpose of securing the lid on the upper edge of the drum.
2. A drum with lid according to claim 1, characterised by meshing groove formed in the external edge of the lid for the annular bead of the clamping ring.
