0The present invention provides a furniture kit which includes components that can be assembled as a cot or as a standard bed, thereby extending use for an individual child well beyond infancy.
In a first aspect the present invention provides a furniture kit including: a first upright; a second upright; two cot end pieces; a pair of returns for each end piece, each pair either integral with or mounted on opposite sides of a respective end piece; and a base for at least partially supporting a mattress, wherein components of the kit can be assembled as a cot, in which: the cot end pieces form substantially vertical ends of the cot; the first upright forms a first side of the cot, extending between the cot end pieces; the second upright forms a second side of the cot, extending between the cot end pieces; and the base extends substantially horizontally between the cot end pieces and uprights, and wherein components of the kit can be assembled as a bed, in which: the cot end pieces form ends of a mattress support, the returns forming legs elevating the cot end pieces from the surface on which the bed stands; one of the base, first upright and second upright extends between the cot end pieces substantially in the plane of the cot end pieces so that together the cot end pieces and the base, first upright or second upright form a mattress support; and one of the first upright, second upright and base forms a headboard of the bed.
-3- Preferably the kit includes a pair of support rails that can be positioned N transverse to and between the cot end pieces to support the base in the cot.
Preferably the support rails can also be positioned to support the base between the cot end pieces in the bed configuration. It will be appreciated that the base can be supported between the cot end pieces in the cot and bed configurations in other ways. For example, recesses may be provided in the cot end pieces to receive corresponding tongues in the base or vice versa or hook Cand eye attachments may be used. The kit may also include a plurality of base Csupports. Typically, the base supports are mountable on the cot end pieces or returns to support the base either directly or via the cot mattress supporting end c pieces or supporting rails.
Preferably one of the uprights is in the form of a drop side that can be movably mounted in the cot to be moved vertically between a raised and a lowered position.
The kit preferably additionally includes one or more cot mattress supporting end pieces that can be positioned at either end of the base adjacent the cot end pieces. These cot mattress supporting end pieces can be used to fill in gaps between the base and cot end pieces.
The kit preferably additionally includes a plurality of feet that can be mounted on the cot end pieces or returns elevating the cot from the surface on which it stands and increasing stability. The feet can be used in an analogous fashion in the bed configuration. Alternatively, different feet for cot and bed assembly may be provided.
The end pieces, returns, and uprights may be of a slatted construction.
Alternatively, they may be solid or a combination of slats and solid panels. Other configurations are also envisaged.
The base is typically of rectangular construction with slats disposed spaced apart and transverse to the longitudinal axis of the rectangle. The sides of the rectangle are adapted to engage with the support rails.
The cot mattress supporting end pieces may be of U shaped construction.
At least one of the cot mattress supporting end pieces may be reusable as a bed end to assist in preventing the bed mattress from sliding from the bed.
Alternatively, a separate bed end may be provided.
-4- Additionally, bed safety rails may be provided. These safety rails can be N mounted horizontally between the head board and bed foot above the mattress support.
The kit may additionally include a pelmet for a head board, head board sides, a bed end, and a bed end support rail. The kit may include connecting bolts, dowels and capping nuts for use in assembly of the cot and/or bed. The kit may be provided as a first cot assembly kit and a second supplementary bed 0assembly kit, wherein all or some of those components only required for bed assembly are provided as a separate kit.
In a second aspect the present invention provides a cot assembled from Scomponents of a kit of the first aspect of the invention including: cot end pieces and two pairs of returns which are either integral with or mounted on the cot end pieces to depend transversely therefrom; a first upright mounted between adjacent returns located or mounted at a first side of each cot end piece; a second upright mounted on adjacent returns located at or mounted on a second side of each end piece; and a base mounted horizontally between the end pieces.
Preferably, the cot includes a pair of support rails extending between the two cot end pieces to support the base.
Preferably the cot includes cot mattress supporting end pieces which are typically disposed at either end of the base, transverse to the support rails. The cot may also include one or more upright capping pieces, base supports and feet.
In a third aspect the present invention provides a bed assembled from components of the kit of the first aspect of the invention including: the cot end pieces arranged to form ends of a mattress support, the returns forming legs elevating the cot end pieces from the surface on which the bed stands; one of the base, first upright and second upright extending between the cot end pieces substantially in the plane of the cot end pieces so that together the cot end pieces and the base, first upright or second upright form a mattress support; and one of the first upright, second upright and base forms a headboard of the bed.
Preferably the bed includes support rails positioned to support the base between the cot end pieces.
The invention will now be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1A shows cot end pieces and cot feet.

Elements of a kit used in the construction of a cot are shown in Figures 1A to E. At least some of these elements are reusable to construct a bed. They include paired cot end pieces, 10, adapted to form cot ends and distal ends of a bed mattress support, each including an end board 11, and a pair of transversally dependent returns, 12a, 12b, adapted to form bed legs in the bed configuration (Figure 1A); a first upright, 20 (Figure 1B), adapted to form a head board and fixable between adjacent returns 12a, located or mounted at a first side of each end board, 11; -6- O a second upright in the form of a drop side 30 (Figure 1B) mountable on Sadjacent returns 12b located or mounted at a second side of each end board, 11; a pair of support rails, 40 (Figure 1C); a base 50 (Figure 1C); a pair of cot mattresses supporting end pieces, 60 (Figure 1D); and feet 70 (Figure 1A).
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a cot 80 assembled from the kit celements of Figures 1A to E.
(Figure 3 is a top plan view of cot OCot 80 has cot end pieces 10 which include end boards 11 which are N spaced apart and parallel. Cot end pieces 10 have dependent transverse returns 12a and 12b facing inwards and opposite each other.
Feet 70 are located to elevate the cot end pieces 10 from the surface on which the cot stands and to help stabilise cot First upright 20 is fixed between returns 12a to form a first fixed side of cot Second upright in the form of drop side 30 is mounted on returns 12b to form a second side of cot 80 that can be moved between a raised and a lowered position.
Support rails 40 extend between end boards 11 parallel to first upright and second upright 30 at a position intermediate the height of cot end pieces Support rails 40 engage and support base 50 (Figure 1D).
Cot mattress supporting end pieces 60 engage with base 50 (Figure 1E).
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a bed 90 assembled from elements illustrated in Figure 1A to E.
Bed 90 includes a head board consisting of first upright 20. Cot end pieces 10 are used as distal ends of a bed mattress support. Cot end pieces are disposed with dependent returns 12a and 12b facing downward to form bed legs. The bed legs have feet 70 mounted on them to assist with stabilizing bed 90. End boards 11 form part of a mattress support. Disposed between end boards 11 are support rails 40 and base 50. Support rails 40 are disposed spaced apart and parallel to the long axis of bed 90 and support base 50, which -7is rotated 900 relative to its orientation in cot 80. Together end boards 11, N support rails 40 and base 50 form a bed mattress support.
A cot mattress supporting end piece 60 is mounted as a bed foot to prevent the bed mattress from slipping from the bed.
Figure 5 shows base 50 supported by support rails 40 in bed Figure 6 shows an assembled cot of the invention and Figure 7 shows a kit of parts from which the cot of Figure 6 can be assembled.
The kit includes glide pins for a second upright in the form of a drop side, wooden dowels connecting bolts D, E and F) of different lengths, cot end pieces each end piece having integral returns 12a, 12b, a first upright 20 a second upright 30, a pair of support rails 40, a pair of cot mattress supporting end pieces 60, a base 50, cot feet 70, base supports 51, and capping rails for each of the first upright and the second upright (21 and 31 respectively).
Wooden dowels are placed in the top of the first upright (20) and the first upright capping rail (21) is fixed to the first upright 20 with these dowels as shown in Figure The capping rail is screwed to the first upright with connecting bolts E.
Wooden dowels are placed in the top of the second upright 30 and the second upright capping rail 31 is fixed to the second upright with these dowels.
The capping rail is screwed to the second upright with connecting bolts E (as shown in Figure Dowels are inserted in sides of the base 50 as shown in Figure 8(3) and the pair of support rails 40 are mounted one to either side of the base by these dowels. The support rails 40 are then screwed to the base 50 using connecting bolts E.
Cot mattress supporting end pieces 60 are mounted at either end of the base and screwed in place with connecting bolts F as shown in Figure 8(3).
Cot feet 70 are mounted to the bottom of the returns 12a, 12b and screwed in place with connecting bolts F as shown in Figure 8(4).
The first upright 20 is mounted between returns 12a on the end pieces using connecting bolts F as shown in Figure As shown in Figure 8 glide pins A are mounted on the returns 12b of the end pieces 10. Second upright 30 includes runners located at either side.
-8- O Second upright is positioned between the returns with runners sliding over the N glide pins A. Bolts C are screwed into the ends of upright SAs shown in Figure base supports 51 are mounted on the end pieces at the required height. Bolts C are used to cover remaining base holes.
The assembled base is lowered into the cot and placed on the base supports 51 as shown in Figure The base 50 is attached to the returns 12a, 12b using connecting bolts F.
Remaining holes in the end pieces are covered with bolts C, as shown in Figure 8(9).
SThe height of the base can be altered as require by unscrewing the base N and the base supports, moving the base supports to the required position and then reassembling the base in the cot. As shown in Figure 8(10), for newborns, the base can be mounted in an elevated position but before the baby can sit up the base should be lowered.
Figure 9 shows an assembled bed of the invention.
Figure 10 shows a kit of parts from which the bed of Figure 9 can be assembled. The kit includes dowels connecting bolts D, E, F, H) of differing lengths capping nuts cot end pieces 10 having end boards 11 and integral returns, a first upright 20, a base, a bed end 61, a pair of support rails, bed feet 70, a head board pelmet 22, a pair of head board sides 23 and a bed end support rail 62.
Figure 11 shows the assembly of the bed of Figure 9.
As shown in Figure 11(1) the first upright 20 has dowels mounted in the top. These dowels are used to mount the head board pelmet 22 which is then screwed into place using connecting bolts E.
End pieces 10 are arranged with returns 12a, 12b depending downwardly to form legs. Bed feet 70 are mounted to the returns with connecting bolts D, as shown in Figure 11(2).
As shown in Figure 11(3) head board sides 23 are mounted extending above a first end piece 10 transverse thereto at either side with bolts E. Dowels are mounted at the inner upper face of the head board sides 23 and the head board (first upright) 20 is mounted to the head board sides 23 via these dowels and then screwed in place with bolts E and F. Support rails 40 are slid through -9the end pieces 10 to hook the end pieces 10 into a ridge on the support rails as shown in Figure 11(4).
The base 50 is mounted on the support rails 40 as shown in Figure 11(4).
The bed end support rail 62 is mounted to the end piece 10 distal to the head board 20 using bolts E as shown in Figure 11(5). The bed end 61 is mounted on to the bed end support rail 62 using bolts F.
Remaining holes on the side of the bed end are filled using bolts H and capping nuts G. Remaining holes on the bed base are filled with bolts C as shown in Figure 11(6).

Claims (18)

1. A furniture kit including: a first upright; a second upright; two cot end pieces; a pair of returns for each end piece, each pair of returns either integral c with or mounted on opposite sides of a respective end piece; and c a base for at least partially supporting a mattress, 0 wherein components of the kit can be assembled as a cot, in which: 0 N the cot end pieces form substantially vertical ends of the cot; the first upright forms a first side of the cot, extending between the cot end pieces; the second upright forms a second side of the cot, extending between the cot end pieces; and the base extends substantially horizontally between the cot end pieces and uprights, and wherein components of the kit can be assembled as a bed, in which: the cot end pieces form ends of a mattress support, the returns forming legs elevating the cot end pieces from the surface on which the bed stands; one of the base, first upright and second upright extends between the cot end pieces substantially in the plane of the cot end pieces so that together the cot end pieces and the base, first upright or second upright form a mattress support; and one of the first upright, second upright and base forms a headboard of the bed.
2. A kit according to claim 1 wherein the kit includes a pair of support rails that can be positioned transverse to and between the cot end pieces to support the base in the cot.
3. A kit according to claim 2 wherein the support rails can also be positioned to support the base between the cot end pieces in the bed configuration. -11 O
4. A kit according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein one of the uprights is in 0 C the form of a drop side that can be movably mounted in the cot to be moved vertically between a raised and a lowered position.
A kit according to any one of claims 1 to 4 which includes one or more cot mattress supporting end pieces that can be positioned at either end of the base adjacent the cot end pieces.
6. A kit according to claim 5, wherein one or more of the cot mattress 0 supporting end pieces can be reused as a bed foot.
7. A kit according to any one of claims 1 to 6 which includes a plurality of feet that can be mounted on the cot end pieces or returns elevating the cot from the surface on which it stands and increasing stability or on the returns elevating the bed from the surface on which it stands and increasing stability.
8. A kit according to any one of claims 1 to 7 including bed safety rails.
9. A kit according to any one of claims 1 to 8 including base supports for mounting on the cot end pieces or returns to support the base.
A kit according to any one of claims 1 to 9 including a bed end and a bed end supporting rail.
11. A kit according to any one of claims 1 to 10 including one or more of head board sides, upright capping rails, dowels, connecting nuts, capping nuts and head board pelmet.
12. A cot assembled from components of a kit according to any one of claims 1 to 9 including: cot end pieces and two pairs of returns which are either integral with or mounted on the cot end pieces to depend transversely therefrom; -12- O a first upright mounted between adjacent returns located or mounted at a cfirst side of each cot end piece; a second upright mounted on adjacent returns located at or mounted on a second side of each end piece; and a base mounted horizontally between the end pieces.
13. A cot according to claim 12 including a pair of support rails extending cbetween the two cot end pieces to support the base.
14. A cot according to claim 12 or 13 including cot mattress supporting end N pieces disposed at either end of the base, transverse to the support rails.
A kit according to anyone of claims 12 to 14 including base supports for mounting on the cot end pieces to support the base.
16. A bed assembled from components of a kit according to any one of claims 1 to 11 including: the cot end pieces arranged to form ends of a mattress support, the returns forming legs elevating the cot end pieces from the surface on which the bed stands; one of the base, first upright and second upright extending between the cot end pieces substantially in the plane of the cot end pieces so that together the cot end pieces and the base, first upright or second upright form a mattress support; and one of the first upright, second upright and base forms a headboard of the bed.
17. A bed according to claim 16 including support rails positioned to support the base between the cot end pieces.
