(Patents Act 1990) COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT FOREVER FOUR-IN-ONE COT JUNIOR BED SOFA DOUBLE BED The following statement and attached photographs are a full description of this invention, including the best possible method of performing it known to me: FOREVER FOUR-IN-ONE COT/JUNIOR BED/SOFA/DOUBLE BED Generally baby furniture (including cots) are designed to be one-off discardable items which cannot effectively be reused or adapted for ongoing subsequent use once the infant has outgrown them. This invention has been specially devised in order to provide a lifetime of affordable, cost effective, efficient, and attractive ongoing use in a number of stages consistent with changes in family lifestyle brought on as the direct result of a child growing from infancy right through to adulthood.
The Four-in-One Cot/Junior Bed/Sofa/Double Bed in accordance with this invention includes a basic Cot kit which can be modified to be a Junior Bed when the infant has outgrown the physical constraints of a cot.
The invention therefore provides a primary furniture kit including a base, a first side, a first end, a second end, a second side, a first and a second pair of legs and two side rails, wherein components of the kit can be assembled as a cot in which the base is disposed horizontally at a cot mattress supporting height between the first end and second end which are vertically disposed with one of the first and second pair of legs mounted at each side, the first side is mounted vertically between the first end and second end to one side of the first end and second end and the second side is mounted vertically between the first end and second end to the other side of the first end and second end, wherein components of the kit can be assembled as a junior bed by mounting the base horizontally at a junior mattress supporting height between the first end and second end which are vertically disposed and mounting the side rails horizontally spanning the first and second ends above the base and wherein the cot can be converted to a junior bed by removal of the first side, second side and legs and mounting the side rails horizontally spanning the first and second ends above the base.
Later on, with subsequent physical growth changes on the part of the infant/junior, the components of the Cot and Junior Bed can be re-assembled, with some components from a secondary kit, to provide two complete items in the form of a Sofa/Lounge and a Double Bed.
The invention therefore provides a furniture kit including a primary furniture kit according to the invention and a secondary kit including a pair of short legs, a plurality of slats, a bed base end and a pair of bed base rails, wherein a sofa can be assembled from components of the kit, in which the base is assembled horizontally between the first and second ends which are vertically disposed and the second side is mounted in an elevated position between the first pair of legs to form a back which is attached to the first and second ends and base, and wherein a double bed can be assembled from components of the kit in which the first side is mounted between the second pair of legs to form a bed head, the bed base rails and bed base end are assembled to form a three sided rectangular frame, short legs are mounted transversely from each join of a bed base rail to the bed base end, the rectangular assembly is mounted on the bed head assembly with slats supported horizontally spaced apart on the rectangular frame to form a mattress supporting platform and the side rails are mounted above and below the bed base end to form a bed end.
The Four-in-One Cot/Junior Bed/Sofa/Double Bed is preferably made from timber, however, other materials such as appropriate ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and structurally sound GRP or carbon fibre based composites can also be used.
The invention may be better understood with reference to the photographs of the four typical embodiments of the various stages of final assembly of the invention of which: Photograph 1 is a perspective view of the Cot.
Photograph 2 is a perspective view of the Junior Bed.
Photograph 3 is a perspective view of the Sofa/Lounge.
Photograph 4 is a perspective view of the Double Bed.
The cot 10 of Figure 1 has a base, 1, a first side, 2, a first end, 3, a second end, 4, a second side, 5, a first pair of legs 6 and 7 and a second pair of legs 8 and 9. Legs 6 and 7 have removable end caps 11 and 12 which fit over curved ends 13 and 14.
The junior bed 20 of Figure 2 has a base, 1, a first end, 3, a second end, 4, and side rails 15 and 16.
The sofa 30 of Figure 3 has a base, 1, a first end 3, a second end 4 and a back, 17, composed of second side 5, and legs 6 and 7 inverted with end caps 11 and 12 removed to reveal curved ends 13 and 14.
The double bed 40 of Figure 4, has a bed head 18 composed of first side 2, and legs 8 and 9, bed base rails 19 and 21, bed end 22 formed from bed base end 23 and side rails 15 and 16, short legs 24 and 25, and slats 26.
The primary furniture kit includes base 1, first side 2, first end 3, second end 4, second side 5, first pair of legs 6 and 7, and second pair of legs 8 and 9, together with removable end caps 11 and 12, which fit ends 13 and 14 of legs 6 and 7.
The secondary kit includes short legs 24 and 25, slats 26, bed base end 23 and bed base rails 19 and 21.
Cot 10 is assembled with legs 6, 7, 8 and 9 mounted on first end 3 and second end 4. Legs 6 and 7 have end caps 11 and 12 mounted on their floor side ends. First side 2 is mounted vertically and laterally between first end 3 and second end 4. Base 1 is mounted horizontally between first end 3 and second end 4 at a cot mattress supporting height. Second side 5 is mounted vertically and laterally between first end 3 and second end 4 at the opposite side of first and second ends 3 and 4 to first side 2. It will be recognized that it is common for cots to include a drop side on one side. Cot 10 can be converted to a junior bed 20 by removal of second side 5, first side 2 and legs 6, 7, 8 and 9 and attachment of side rails 15 and 16 horizontally spanning first end 3 and second end 4 above the base. Junior bed can be assembled from the primary kit by mounting base 1 horizontally between first end 3 and second end 4 at a junior mattress supporting height, and attachment of side rails 15 and 16.
Junior bed 20 can be converted to sofa 30 by removal of side rails 15 and 16, followed by attachment of legs 6 and 7 to second side 5, to form back 17 which is mounted to the base and end assembly to form a sofa back. The legs are inverted and have end caps 11 and 12 removed to reveal curved ends 13 and 14.
Back 17 has second side 5 mounted on legs 6 and 7 in a raised position so that the lower edge of second side 5 is adjacent base 1.
Sofa 30 can also be assembled by mounting base 1 horizontally between first end 3 and second end 4 which are vertically disposed. Back 17 is assembled from legs 6 and 7 and second side 5 and mounted on the base and end assembly as discussed above.
Double bed 40 is assembled by attaching legs 8 and 9 to first side 2 to form bed head 18. Bed base rails 19 and 21 are joined to bed base end 23 and short legs 24 and 25 to form a three sided rectangular frame with transversely dependent legs. Side rails 15 and 16 are mounted above and below bed base end 23 to form a bed end. This rectangular frame is attached to bed head 18 via legs 8 and 9, at mattress supporting height below the lower. edge of first side 2. Slats 26 are supported horizontally by the rectangular frame in spaced apart configuration to provide a mattress supporting platform.
