Description
A MOVEABLE EID READING APPARATUS FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to reading objects, typically livestock, positioned within a multirace or stalls, typically milking shed bails, by a moveable electronic identification device (EID) reading apparatus, typically an antenna/reader.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Generally, to identify or reading objects positioned within a multi-race or stall involves visually inspecting each object within the race or stall. This is not easily achieved especially if the objects are livestock. Typically livestock can be identified by way of ear tags, however when the livestock are within multi-race or stalls it is not always easy to visually inspect an ear tag. It is known to provide milking cows with transponders, typically with an ear tag or a rumen pellet and to provide individual antenna/reader for each bail of a milking shed such that feed is dispensed from a moveable feeder in accordance to what is recorded in the transponder. More generally, there is a need to identify or read a transponder carried by an animal in a specific bail or location or if there is no animal in that bail or if the transponders carried by the animal is not functioning or is malfunctioning or depending on information transmitted and received, any specific needs or work necessary for an animal located in a particular bail.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to provide a moveable identification apparatus, typically a moveable overhead or in front of or under identification apparatus adapted to s472provspec. 1 203.doc identify objects positioned within a multi-race or stalls, typically side by side bails, that ameliorates the disadvantages and limitations of the known art or at least provide the public with a useful choice.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS This invention will now be described in relation to a preferred embodiment of the invention, namely the reading of milking cows with in the bails in a milking shed. The following description is an exemplification only and is no way limiting as it is envisaged that the invention can be used to read other livestock or any object having an EID when the livestock or object are in a side by side relationship in a multi-race or stalls or similar arrangement.
s472provspec. 1 203.doc Turning to Figure 1 and 2, there is shown a first preferred embodiment a milking shed 10 having a plurality of side by side bails 1301 to 1311 in which milking cows are housed for milking. Positioned above the side by side bails is a moveable reading apparatus consisting of moveable antenna/reader 30 and a support The antenna/reader 30 is able to read the EID's of each cow as it passes each cow within a bail. The EID's of each cow is typically a rumen pellet transponder 82 or eartag transponder 81 (see Figures 3, 5 The antenna/reader 30 is able to read the rumen pellet or eartag transponders 81, 82 at any available frequency.
The antenna/reader 30 is able to move reciprocally along a support 20 such that the antenna/reader 30 is able to read and record the presence or record the non-presence of a cow within the bails 1301 to 1311 as the antenna/reader moves along the support Empty bails are shown, 1308 and 1302. The support 20 can consist of a rail, track, wire or cable positioned in a parallel and spaced apart relationship with respect to the bails 1301 to 1311 such that the support 20 extends over all the bails 1301 to 1311 and subsequently all the cows within the bails. The support 20 as shown in Figure 1 is mounted to walls 11 and 12 of the milking shed.
The milking shed 10 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 is of the standard rectangular type, however it is envisaged that the invention can be used and adapted for use within milking sheds or feedlots of differing shapes such as herring bone shaped milking sheds or long feed troughs.
s472provspec. 1203.doc Turning to Figures 3 and 4, in a preferred form, the support 20 consists of a rail, preferably an I-beam (fig 4) having an upper surface 21 and lower surface 22 defining space 27 28 in which wheels 36 37 of a trolley 39 can move. The trolley 39 is part of the antenna/reader and has a motor 34 with a shaft 35 rotatably connected to at least one of wheels 37 in order to impart motion so that the antenna 30 is able to move along the rail Preferably, the motor is electrically powered by way of power cord 321, however it is envisaged that the motor could also be powered by battery, compressed air, vacuum or hydraulics. Also, the rail itself could be electrified in order to power the motor 34.
Preferably, the motor 34 is an electric motor, however it can also be a compressed air motor, vacuum motor or hydraulic motor. The antenna/reader 30 has an antenna shield 31 suspended by chains 33 from the trolley 39 and the shield is connected by a communication cable 32 directly to a control module on the antenna/reader 30 which has built in transmitter and receivers to allow data to be transmitted to a remote computer by another communication cable connected to the antenna/reader 30 or by known wireless network systems.
In use, the moveable reading apparatus is used in conjunction with a computer and/or computer network to identify, track and monitor cows having transponders within a particular milking bail such that data pertaining to the particular cow being milked can be updated and feed and supplement supplied to the particular cow identified. Data such as how much milk produced by the cow for the current milking session can be recorded against the cow identified and this data can be compared with the cows average and the average of the whole herd. Also the moveable reading apparatus is able to monitor what cows were milked and when and as a consequence identify cows that were not milked and s472provspec. 1203.doc those with high or low milking outputs. Also, the moveable reading apparatus can be used in conjunction with a marking device 39, typically a spray marker 39, mounted to the shield 31 of the antenna/reader 30, so that a particular cow identified by the antenna/reader can be marked for processing after milking, such as identifying what cows are to be drafted from the herd.
At the time of milking, cows are ushered into the bails 1301 to 1311 and the antenna/reader 30 is in a start position, preferably positioned over bail 1311. Each bail has a sensor 41 to 49, 491 492, typically a proximity sensor, linked, via cables or suitable remote means, to antenna/reader 30 such that the presence of a cow is sensed and a signal sent to the antenna/reader. Then the antenna/reader 30 from its starting position over bail 1311 ascertains via sensor 41 if a cow is within bail 1311 and if so the rumen pellet transponder 82 or ear tag transponder 81 is read to identify the cow and compare the data read with that data recorded, typically on the computer. If the particular cow identified is to be marked a signal is sent to the marking device 39 to commence marking and if the cow is to be supplied a particular amount of feed 71 and/or supplement 71 to a feed bin a signal is sent to the feed and supplement dispensers 72,73 t o dispense the feed and supplement.
At the end of identifying the cow in bail 1311 or the non presence of a cow in bail 1311 the antenna/reader 30 moves to the next bail 1310 and repeats the identifying process sequentially until reaching and identifying the cow in the last bail 1301. Thereafter the antenna/reader 30 returns to the starting position over bail 1311. After milking the s472provspec. 1203.doc cows are released and a new set of cows enter the bails and the whole sequential process begins again.
In order to assist the movement of the antenna/reader 30 over, in front or under the bails and to make sure the antenna/reader stops at a particular bail, sensors 51 to 61 are positioned over and in line with each bail and the sensors are adapted to sense when the antenna/reader 30 is in the correct or optimum position for reading a cows transponder when a cow is within the bail. The sensors 51 to 61 upon sensing the antenna/reader sends a signal, by known communication means, to the antenna/reader 30 in order to cause the antenna/reader 30 to stop moving if a cow is sensed by proximity sensors 41 to 49, 491 and 492 within a particular bail in which the antenna/reader is passing over.
Turning to Figures 5 and 6, a second preferred embodiment is shown whereby antenna/reader shield 311 depends downwardly such that as the antenna/reader 30 moves across a particular bail the cow is brushed by antenna/reader shield 311. In this particular embodiment the brushing of the shield can serve a number of purposes such as enhancing the readability of the transponders but also to assist in the application of a marker or pesticide or the like.
Turning to Figure 7, wherein a third embodiment of the invention is described whereby the antenna/reader drive mechanism of the first embodiment is replaced by a belt drive mechanism. The belt drive mechanism consists of both 23 24 affixed to one of the wheels 36 of the trolley.
s472provspec. 1203.doc Turning to Figure 8, there is shown a fourth embodiment whereby the drive mechanism is replaced by a chain driven drive mechanism having a chain 25 upon which a sprocket 26 attached to a wheel 36 is caused to travel in order to assist in movement of the antenna/reader 30 along the support The antenna/reader 30 moves back and forth along the support such that the antenna/reader 30 can continuously track and monitor cows within the bails. The antenna/reader 30 moves to the next bail if the livestock does not enter a bail or if the bail is empty and recognises what bail position it is at and can display this position on a screen or notify a computing means of its position. The antenna/reader 30 is able to be self powered preferably by batteries or by power and data cables. The movement of the antenna/reader 30 along the support can be controlled by a remote controller, typically a radio communication link system.
The antenna/reader 30 can be operated manually so as to stop over an individual livestock which is required to be read and this can be achieved by a cable operated button controller or by remote control. The antenna/reader 30 is able to be automatically charged when it returns to the start position if battery powered. The support 20 can include cables and pulleys to which the antenna/reader 30 can be mounted or attached to allow the antenna/reader 30 to move along the support 20. The antenna/reader 30 can be made from either a solid material or a flexible product. The antenna/reader 30 can be linked to a barcode printer or similar device either by radio link or cable so that when the antenna/reader 30 is moved over a particular cow the transponder 31, 82 is transmitted and an individual number is provided so that a label can be printed for herd recording s472provspec. 1 203.doc and/or placed on a sample bottle or if the bottle is electronically identified the number can be logged against this number.
Turning to Figure 9 there is shown a fifth embodiment whereby the support 20 is mounted to a side wall 100 extending in a longitudinal direction in front of the bails. The support 20 as shown in Figure 9 is similar to that shown in Figure 3 and surface 22 mounted to the wall 100 at a postion above the height of the livestock such that as the antenna/reader 30 moves along the support via motorised wheels 36 37 within surfaces 21 and 22 of the support 22 the antenna/reader 30 is able to read the transponders on or within the cow.
A LED display can be linked to the antenna/reader 30 to indicate a particular cows own herd number when the antenna/reader 30 travels across the cow being read. The LED display can be mounted on the moving antenna/reader 30 or at a remote fixed position to display EID number, cow or herd number or a total count of the animals.
The proximity type sensors 41 to 49, 491 and 492 for locating the position of the antenna/reader 30 above a cow to be read will automatically turn on and read the transponder of the cow and once the antenna/reader 30 has read the transponder it will turn itself off and a light above the cow will indicate that the cow has been read.
Preferably, the antenna/reader 30 is fully programmable and controllable via a console connected directly through an RS232/RS485/RNET/RPC/ETHERNET/BLUE TOOTH/RF MODEM/FIBRE OPTIC connection.
