Abstract

A liquid crystalline medium is based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectric anisotropy comprising at least one substituted indan compound. A liquid crystalline medium (I) is based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectric anisotropy comprising at least one substituted indan compound of formula (1). [Image] R : F, Cl, Br, I, CN, NCS, SF5 or 1-12C alkyl, optionally mono-substitued by CN or CF3 or optionally multiply substituted by halogen whereby two non-neighboring CH2 groups are replaced by -O-, -CHCH-, -CFCF-, -CC-, -CO-, -OCO- or -COO-; A1>, A2>1,4-phenylene whereby up to two CH are optionally replaced by N, optionally substituted by L, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene whereby non-neighboring CH2 groups are replaced by -O- and -S-, 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-bicyclo-(2,2,2)-octylene, piperidine-1,4-diyl, naphthalene-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl; L : C, Cl, Br, I, CN, NCS, SF5, 1-3C alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy, alkenyl or oxaalkenyl optionally substituted by F or Cl; Z1>, Z2>-CH2O-, -IOCH2-, -CF2O-, -OCF2-, -COO-, -OCO-, -CF2CF2, -CH2CH2-, -(CH2)4-, -(CH2)3O-, -O(CH2)3-, -CF2CH2-, -CHCH-, -CHCF-, -CFCF-, -CC- or a single bond; X1>, X2>F, Cl, Br, I, CN, NCS, SF5 or 1-5C alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkenyl or oxaalkenyl, optionally substituted by F or Cl or one of X1> or X2> is H or R; n,o : 0-2; n+o : =3. An independent claim is included for a liquid crystal display containing the liquid crystalline medium (I).
