Description
1 SLAT PANEL TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to panels and has particular relevance to slat-type panels suitable for use in many applications such as for door panels, decorative panels, fencing and the like.
BACKGROUND ART Lightweight metal panels are used in many applications as indicated above.
In some instances, e.g. carports fully enclosed doors or gates are not always required by the home owner.
One current popular form of closing off a carport area is to use timber slats mounted on an aluminium door frame. These doors are attractive visually but relatively expensive.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a slat panel which can be used in many situations and which is both aesthetically attractive and economic to produce.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION According to the present invention, there is provided a panel comprising a plurality of spaced elongate slats of a generally Cshaped cross-section, and end channels of a generally C-shaped configuration engaged with the ends of the slats so that longitudinal axis of the slats and the channels intersect at right angles, and fastening means for uniting the channels with each of the slats.
The end channels can comprise parallel flanges joined by a common web with one of the parallel limbs being substantially longer than the other.
The fastening means for uniting the channels can be applied via the shorter limb.
The outer and inner faces of the slats are in contrasting colours and the colour of the flange overlying the front face of the slats is matched to the colour of the outer faces of the slats.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Aspects of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1, 2 and 3 are front, top and rear views, respectively, of a panel according to one aspect of the present invention, and Figqures 4 and 5 are end views of the panel of figures 1 to 3, and Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional drawing of a slat for the panel taken at VI:VI of Figure 3.
With respect to the drawings, the panel of the present invention generally indicated by arrow 1 comprises a plurality of generally C-section slats 2, generally C-section and end channels 3 and fastening means such as rivets or screws 4 securing the slats and channels together to form a semirigid panel.
Figure 2 highlights the cross-sectional shape of the channels 3 and figure 6 the cross-sectional shape of the slats 2.
The slats 2 have a common web 5 and two opposed flanges 6 with inturned ends 7.
The channels 3 have a common web 8 and parallel flanges with one of the flanges 9a being optionally significantly longer than its opposite flange 9b.
The slats may be produced with inner and outer faces in contrasting colours.
The limb 9b of the channels can be coloured to match the 3 colour of the front faces 2a of the slats.
The spacings between the slats may be varied as may be the overall width and depth of the panels.
The flanges 6 of the slats 2 may be inclined (see broken outline in Figure 6) to give a louvre effect.
Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the spirit or scope thereof.
Claims (4)
1. A panel comprising a plurality of spaced elongate slats of a generally C- shaped cross-section, and end channels of a generally C-shaped configuration engaged with the ends of the slats so that longitudinal axis of the slats and the channels intersect at right angles, and fastening means for uniting the channels with each of the slats.
2. A panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the end channels comprise parallel flanges joined by a common web with one of the parallel limbs being substantially longer than the other.
3. A panel as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the fastening means for uniting the channels are applied via the shorter limb.
4. A panel as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the outer and inner faces of the slats are in contrasting colours and the colour of the flange overlying the front face of the slats is matched to the colour of the outer faces of the slats. A panel substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. DATED this 2 5 th day of October 2002 NICHOLAS JOHN HARRIS By their patent attorneys Cullen Co.
