Description

-M
AUSTRALIA
Patent act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT SELF RELEASING BIODEGRADABLE FISHING SINKERS The following statement is a full description of the invention, including the best method of performing it known to me.
SELF-RELEASING BIODEGRADABLE FISHING SINKERS For certain types of recreational fishing there are advantages to be had if the sinker (weight) can be released from the line after the fishing line has been cast and has sunk to the bottom. This invention has been specially devised to achieve this end by having a rapidly dissolving detaching- link by which the fishing line is attached to the sinker. The sinker itself is made of a biodegradable material that soon breaks down and disperses so as not to harm the underwater environment.
The invention may be better understood with reference to the illustration of embodiments of the invention in which Figure. 1. Is an illustration of the detaching link before it being moulded into the sinker.
Figure 2. Is an overall illustration of the sinker attached to the fishing line.
Figure 3. Is an illustration of the sinker on the bottom detaching from the fishing line.
Figure 4. is an illustration of the detached sinker breaking down on the bottom.
A sinker in accordance with this invention comprises a moulded shape(Fig.2-l) comprising of 6parts of ordinary silica beach sand combined with 1 part of powdered gelatin. This mixture is combined with a quantity of hot water to form a slurry that can be poured into a mould of the desired size and shape.
The compound mixture can vary to include any sort of heavy non- toxic mineral sand, and any sort of non-toxic natural binding agent such starch, sugar or glutin.
The compound mixture can contain organic fish-attracting substances such as powered fish meal or tuna oil so that it serves to attract fish to the general area as it dissolves.
During the moulding process the sinker is moulded around an detaching- link (Fig. 1) which comprises of a perforated or shaped strip of solidified gelatin (as used in pharmacutical capsules) The material for the detaching-link can vary to include any natural soluble non-toxic substance such as starch, glutin etc.
The thickness and formulation of this gelatin detaching- link is such that it will rapidly dissolve and release the fishing line in less than 1 minute.(Fig.3.-) The 2/3s of this detaching- link (Fig. 1.1) that is moulded into the sinker is first coated with a non water-soluble coating ,such as white shellac, so that it doesn't dissolve during the moulding process. The detaching-link (Fig.l) is shaped or perforated so that it keys into the sinker compound during the moulding process. The detaching-link to be strong enough to take the forces during the casting of the fishing line out into the water.

Claims (4)

1. A fishing sinker or weight that rapidly detaches from the fishing line when it has reached the bottom.
2. A fishing sinker or weight that is made of largely biodegradable material that soon dissolves and breaks down so as not to harm the under-water environment.
3. A fishing sinker or weight according to claim 1. That detaches from the fishing line by using a water soluble gelatin attaching- link that will release the line in less that 1 minute.
4. A fishing sinker or weight according to claim 2. That is made of a mixture of silica sand ,or similar mineral sand, and gelatin, or other organic binding agent, that will dissolve and disperse without harm to the underwater environment within a period of 2-3 days. A fishing sinker or weight as herein before described with reference to figures 1-4 on the accompanying drawing. Robert and Susan Brunton March 17 2002
