SPECIFICATION
INNOVATION PATENT PORTABLE TIMBER MILLING MACHINE WITH A VERTICALLY MOUNTED CUTTING ACTION John Gilbert The invention is described in the following statement This invention relates to improvements in both static and portable sawmilling machines to produce square edged timber.
For many sawmill operators and ownerschainsaw and small motor driven sawmills can provide a cost effective method for primary sawmilling of timber.
However due to the problems generally associated with vertically mounted chainsaw cutting chains, existing sawmills of this type are generally poor performers and the result is low recovery rates of sawn product. The major problem with vertically mounted cutting chains is the tip of the chainsaw bar will wander in the cut causing inacurately sawn boards. As a general rule the longer the cutting bar the more flex at the tip and therefore a greater risk of inacuracy exists.
This invention employs a ridged track suspended over a mainframe and log bed that self align to assist with accurate cutting. The design includes an operational improvement that is not seen on other vertical cutting machines.
The improvement reduces errors in accuracy and increases efficency when gauging cuts. The improvement also increases the accuracy of the resultant sawn product. The improved design is a guide, bush or slide mounted at the proximity of the cutting bar tip. The guide, bush or slide travels in a housing the full length of the cut which eliminates any sideways or lateral deflection and this ensures an accurate cut. The housings or guide rails can be singular or multiple.
The sawmill can be dismantled and reassembled for ease of transportation or it can be transported on a trailer. The sawmill is very easy to adjust and maintain and its construction is strong and durable enabling it to be used in a variety of operating conditions.
The track assembly supports the carriage and cutting tool and this helps maintain repeated accuracy as every cut is supported. When using this cutting system the depth of cut is adjusted by setting the fences to the desired size.
The carriage is bearing mounted to hold the carriage in the vertical plane while it is driven along the length of the track by the operation of a hand or motor driven winch.
