Abstract
1. A method of increasing the service life of basic linings of converters in the refining of pig iron into steel using MgO or substances containing MgO and lime as additives, additives of this type being injected into the focus region, characterised in that the MgO or the substances containing MgO are injected into the liquid pig iron in the presence of CaO or basic substances containing CaO with the proviso that injection begins with the refining process is terminated after 15 to 35% of the refining time, the additives in question having a particle size of less than 2 mm and the quantities of MgO and CaO having to be measured in such a way that a percentage CaO/MgO ratio and a percentage CaO/SiO2 ratio are obtained in the slag which, as shown in diagram 1, belong functionally together and lie between curves A and B, whilst the remainder of the lime required is added beginning after 15% to 35% of the refining time.
