Abstract

2-30C Paraffins are dehydrogenated by contacting them with a catalyst comprising (by wt.) 0.01-5% of a Pt group component, 0.01-5% of a Sn component, 0.01-15% of an alkali(ne earth) component, and a halogen component. During the process, the halogen content of the catalyst is maintained at between 0.2 and 15 wt.% and the atomic ratio of the alkali(ne earth) component to the Pt gp. component is kept at more than 10. Improved yields are obtd. due to the improved activity, selectivity and stability of the catalyst compared with prior art catalysts without a controlled halogen content. Catalysts comprising (a) Pt Gp.component, (b) Gp.IVa component, (c) alkali(ne earth) component and (d) above 0.2 wt.% halogen component, on a porous carrier, where the atomic ratio (c):(a) is above 10, are described as new. They are useful for dehydrogenating paraffins to monoolefins or 3-5C monoolefins to dienes.
