Abstract
Before the fiber batt (3) is wound up into a roll, it is compressed (31) and then released (33) in a direction at right angles to the surfaces (21,22) to make it more elastic. At least the surface forming the outside of the roll is treated. Variants of the process also apply some compression and decompression in an axial direction by changing the angle of the conveyors (13 to 17, 23 to 27). An Independent claim is also included for a rolling station incorporating a compression (31) and decompression (33) zone. The action can be carried out by angled conveyors (13 to 17, 23 to 27) or alternatively by rollers or hydraulically activated plungers. The rate of deformation is controlled and can include steam treatment.
