Abstract
The head control involves a bore (10) which is excavated by a head (12) in advance of a working tube (14) in which an inertial sensor (16) measures angles of pitch, roll and yaw w.r.t. a fixed coordinate system. Tunnel lining sections (24,26,28) follow in succession from a starting pit and are pressed together by hydraulic rams as the head advances. The direction of the longitudinal axis of one (28) of the following sections is checked by another inertial unit (38) therein on attainment of the position in which the first measurement was made.
