Description

It has also been proposed that the alkali, which is very strongly saturated with hydrochloric acid, be separated from the precipitated aluminum chloride crystals by displacement with concentrated aluminum chloride solution, which is expediently pressed into the crystal-containing alkali saturated with hydrochloric acid from below.
The thick salt paste obtained according to the present process only by evaporation without the involvement of hydrochloric acid can be filtered easily and provides only a relatively small amount of non-acidic or weakly acidic mother liquor.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for the production of alumina from raw materials containing alumina by dissolving the starting material in hydrochloric acid, precipitating the aluminum chloride in crystal form, washing the crystals and heating them with elimination of hydrochloric acid, characterized in that the separation of the aluminum chloride crystals is effected by evaporation of part of the digestion solution and that Washing of these crystals is done first with a solution of aluminum chloride and hydrochloric acid and then with pure iron-free hydrochloric acid alone.
