Process for separating thorium from soda lye containing oxalate.

In order to separate the thorium from the rare earths, the so-called soda process is used when it comes to products in which the thorium content has already been enriched to a certain extent compared to the original material. In this process, the oxalates, which are already heavily enriched with thorium, are treated with a warm soda solution, through which most of the thorium is dissolved as oxalate, while the ceramics remain undissolved in the residue.

So far the thorium from this solution was in
 EMI1.1
Oxalate was precipitated, which was converted into hydrate by means of alkalis or ammonia and this in the usual way in nitrate or in the salt. which was to be produced, was transferred, or the thorium-containing solution was directly precipitated by an excess of alkalis or ammonia and the precipitated hydrate was treated as described earlier.

The subject matter of the invention is a method in which the thorium is deposited from the thorium-containing soda solution in a pure hydrate form without the aid of reagents. The procedure consists in diluting the thorium-containing soda solution very strongly and then heating it. Even at a temperature of about 900 (all thorium precipitates as oxalic acid-free and alkali-free hydrate (hydrocarbonate). It only needs to be filtered and dissolved in acid in order to obtain the salt which is intended to be produced.

Apart from the fact that chemicals are saved, the method according to the invention is also distinguished by this. that the. Deposition can be carried out in a relatively short time.

   Example:
 EMI1.2
Diluted 1: 5 and heated to about 900. Here the thorium separates in a hydrate form (containing carbonic acid). namely oxals. acid-free and alkali-free. The precipitate is filtered off and washed.
