Direct reading of the high vacuum meter.
EMI1.1
The mode of operation of this high vacuum gauge is as follows: First, the connection piece is connected to the container in a gas-tight manner, then an energy sequence that is as constant as possible is passed through

brought and kept that it reaches exactly to mark e in the capillary. The meniscus of the mercury when the thermometer is not heated is below the mark f. If the container is now evacuated, the thermal conductivity of the air in the cylindrical cavity between h and k decreases at a high vacuum and the mercury finally reaches the practically achievable maximum
EMI1.3
the tearing and getting stuck of the mercury thread is very great.
This disadvantage can be avoided if the space above the mercury is filled with a highly compressed gas, e.g. B. the indifferent nitrogen, fills. This has a double advantage because, firstly, the boiling point of the mercury is higher under high pressure and, secondly, because the thread does not break.
The high boiling temperature allows a high heating temperature of the piston k to be selected, so that the influence of the change in room temperature on the technically correct operation of the vacuum gauge is negligible. The compression pressure of the gas above the mercury can be many atmospheres, but to avoid excessive stress on the glass walls when the mercury is heated up

It is advisable to choose the distance smaller than the free path of the gas molecules at the normal value of the high vacuum.
The high vacuum meter described can also be used for the automatic actuation of relays. If you z. B. the marks c and replaced by protruding into the capillary platinum wires, which are the free wire ends of the excitation circuit of a relay causing the switching on and off of the vacuum pump, then the circuit can be made so that the vacuum pump auto-
