Die Darstel1ungsweisen von Perylen benötigen entweder kostspielige Ausgangsmaterialien oder liefern nur ganz ungenügende Ausbeute (Ber., 43 (1910), S. 2202 ; Ber. 46 (1913), S. 1994). Bei den bessere Ausbeuten liefernden Verfahren von Hausgirg und Zinke (Mon. f. Ch.", 40 (1919), S. 403) bedarf man kostspieliger und die Arbeitsweise erschwerende Phosphorverbindungen.
Es wurde nun gefunden, dass man durch pyrogene Reduktion von Dioxyperylen, wie es z. B. nach der Patent-Nr. 96973 erhalten werden kann, glatt Perylen erhält. Die pyrogene Reduktion erfolgt am besten durch Destillation des Dioxyperylens über Zinkstaub, kann jedoch auch auf andere Weise, wie z. B. durch direktes Erhitzen von Dioxyperylen mit Zinkstaub oder Eisenpulver, bewirkt werdenDas so erhaltene Perylen kann als Ausgangsmaterial für die Darstellung von in der Färberei und Pharmacie brauchbaren Derivaten Verwendung finden.
Beispiel l : l Teil Dioxyperylen wird mit 2 Teilen Zinkstaub verrieben und im Wasserstoffstrom über erhitztem Zinkbimsstein destilliert. Das in Form eines rotgelben, bald erstarrend ! n Öles überdestillierende Perylen kann durch Kristallisation aus den bekannten Mitteln rein erhalten werden. Es besitzt dann alle Eigenschaften des in der Literatur als Perylen beschriebenen Kohlenwasserstoffes.
Auch durch Umfällen aus Toluol oder Eisessig kann das erhaltene Perylen gereinigt werden.

The processes by Hausgirg and Zinke (Mon. f. Ch. ", 40 (1919), p. 403), which give better yields, require more expensive phosphorus compounds which make the procedure more difficult.
