Desulfurizing agents for iron baths.
It is already known to use alkaline earth compounds together with alkali compounds for the desulfurization of iron baths. Only relatively small amounts of alkali compounds have been added to the alkaline earth compounds as fluxes.
It has now been found that the mixture of alkaline earth and alkali compounds can only achieve extensive bonding of the sulfur if the alkali compound is present in excess, such that more than 50% of the alkali compound in the mixture; are included.
With such mixing ratios, the specified amount of the alkali compound causes a considerable reduction in the melting point of the compound, which is of decisive importance for the sulphurisation process. With the high melting point of alkaline earth compounds compared to iron. z. B. of lime, there must be considerable overheating of the slag. z. B. in the electrical

The effect is most favorable when only enough alkaline earth compounds are added with the alkali compounds that the melting point of the mixture is not, or not significantly, higher

especially with the addition of mixtures of alkaline earth compounds, e.g. B. dolomite. with their addition only go so far that the melting point of the mixture is lower than that of the alkali compounds alone. The decisive mixing ratios are specified in the known Sehmelzdian rules of mixtures of alkaline earth and alkali compounds, and the ratio corresponding to the lowest point of the melting temperature curve is advantageously chosen. So z. B. at one
