Brennstoff für Explosionsmotoren.
Infolge der Knappheit an Benzin wird zurzeit das Benzol in grossen Mengen als Brennstoff für Explosionsmotoren verwendet. Dieses hat jedoch vor dem Benzin grosse Nachteile, da einerseits keine vollständige Verbrennung eintritt, was leicht zur Verrussung der Zündkerzen führt, anderseits der hohe Erstarrungspunkt ein Hindernis bei der Verwendung bei niederen Temperaturen bildet. Aus diesen Gründen kann daher das Benzol auch für Flugzeugmotoren nicht verwendet werden.
Es hat sich nun gezeigt, dass die Methyl-und Dimethylcyclohexane, die sich durch Hydrierung von Toluol und Xylol leicht darstellen lassen und die selbst bei Temperaturen von - 400 noch nüssig bleiben, einen vorzüglichen Brennstoff für Explosionsmotoren darstellen. Sie ergeben, verbunden mit hoher Verbrennungswärme, eine völlig russfreie Verbrennung und können somit auch in der Flugzeugindustrie in hervorragendem Masse Verwendung finden.

As a result of the shortage of petrol, benzene is currently used in large quantities as a fuel for explosion engines. However, this has major disadvantages compared to gasoline, since on the one hand there is no complete combustion, which easily leads to sooting of the spark plugs, and on the other hand the high freezing point forms an obstacle to use at low temperatures. For these reasons, benzene cannot be used for aircraft engines either.
It has now been shown that the methyl and dimethylcyclohexanes, which can easily be prepared by hydrogenating toluene and xylene and which remain nutty even at temperatures of −400, are an excellent fuel for explosion engines. Combined with high heat of combustion, they result in completely soot-free combustion and can therefore also be used to an excellent extent in the aircraft industry.
