Description

B.. Kalium-Kalzium-Bariumsulfit u. dgl., zur Extraktion benutzt meiden.

Process for the production of a tannin substitute.
The invention relates to a process for the production of a tannin substitute which can be used for the manufacture of usable leather both on its own and mixed with the vegetable tannin extracts customary up to now without generally changing the previous procedure.
The use of tars of all kinds for tanning is known; either the
Tar as such in connection with table salt or mixtures of tar with
Oil of turpentine or other thinners or solvents applied.
According to the method forming the subject of the invention, the tar is not used as such, but an extract of the tar is obtained by treatment with aqueous solutions of salts of sulphurous acid, in particular with sodium sulphite solution. The substances valuable for tanning dissolve in this, while the phenols of the tar, which are still contained in the tanning liquors obtainable by the above known process, are not dissolved out as well. However, the high phenol content gives the tanning liquor harmful properties: the leather is dyed too dark.
It was not foreseeable that these phenols would not dissolve in the sodium sulfite solution; because sodium sulfite solution has an alkaline reaction, and the phenols are known to be soluble in alkalis.
The solution of the tar constituents in sodium sulfite solution can be used immediately for tanning; However, the tanning liquor is improved by adding alum or similar acidic salts such as aluminum sulphate, chrome alum etc. and copper sulphate.
These salts can also be added to the sodium sulfite solution while it is being used to leach the tar.
The process can be carried out cold or at elevated temperature.
It is accelerated by increasing the temperature.
For example, 20 to 25 parts by weight of sodium sulfite are dissolved in 100 parts by weight of water. 50 parts by weight of tar, for example beech wood tar, are added to this solution and the mixture is processed for a long time in a stirrer. Then you can add 8 to 10 parts by weight of aluminum sulfite or 6 to 7 parts by weight of alum with constant stirring, turn off the stirrer and add another o '$ to 1 part by weight of vitriol, whereupon the stirrer is allowed to work again. The liquid resulting from this treatment is separated from the tar residue and can be used immediately for tanning or thickened by evaporation.
Instead of sodium sulfite, any other water-soluble sulfites, such as. B. Potassium-calcium-barium sulfite u. Like. Avoid used for extraction.
