Device for uninterrupted distillation of wood u. like
There are facilities for uninterrupted distillation of wood u. The like. Known in which, for the purpose of permanent loading and emptying of the retort, the incoming and outgoing goods are moved forward by means of pistons moving back and forth and are compressed in such a way that it forms a tight seal of the retort without interrupting the supply and removal of the goods becomes. In such distillation devices, the entry of oxygen-containing air into the interior of the retort must be avoided, as well as the escape of combustible distillation gases together with the material to be emptied.
The invention relates to a device in which these conditions are taken into account by a simple means. For this purpose, the piston that moves the material forward and compresses it is arranged in such a way that it does not completely close the mouth of the feed hopper when it moves forward. Then the air contained in the loading material or the gas added to the emptying material can be expelled by compressing the material and escape through the funnel. The gas expelled in this way is fed back to the remaining gas obtained by the distillation.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing. FIG. 1 shows a vertical longitudinal section through the entire distillation device, FIG. 2 shows the emptying device in longitudinal section and on a larger scale.
The device has a rotatable retort 10, expediently of cylindrical shape, which is mounted inclined in the usual way and is provided with a narrower neck 10 a at the upper insertion end. This expediently consists of one piece with the retort and also serves as a drive shaft. The retort, several of which can be combined to form a battery, is supported on masonry 11. There are ribs or blades in the retort which keep the goods in motion when they circulate around the retort. Each retort lies in a heating chamber 12 a, which is heated by a heating channel 13.
In front of this heating channel there is a furnace and in order to achieve an appropriate distribution of the heat. the heating channel 13 is longitudinally connected to the heating chamber 12 a through a number of openings. The used heating gases are discharged through a chimney 16.
The retort rests with its neck 10a in a bearing 17 which is attached to the masonry 11, while it rotates with its lower end, which does not need to be narrowed, in a stuffing box 18. The latter is connected to a hollow head 19 which, by means of a stuffing box, allows the retort to be changed in length without impairing the seal.
To drive the retort, a worm wheel 20, which is driven by a worm 21, is attached to its neck 10 a. Any suitable thrust bearing can be used to absorb the axial bearing pressure. In the present case, behind the worm wheel 20, a collar 22 is provided with a shoulder 22 resting on the right side surface of the bearing and rubbing, and a shoulder 22 a at the foot of the bearing 17, on which the collar 22 can grind. The neck 10 a runs out into a stuffing box 23 in which a tube 24 serving to introduce the goods is located.
This feed pipe 24 is supported by a bearing 26 which. By means of a bracket 25a from the wall

The end of the feed pipe 24 is seated and driven by a pulley 31 or the like.
The stroke of the piston 27 is set in such a way that the front end of the piston does not quite reach the rear edge of the funnel 26 opening into the tube 24, which edge is located after the retort. When the piston moves forward, which compresses the amount of material that has fallen from the funnel into the tube and pushes it towards the retort, a small gap remains through which the air expelled when the charge is compressed can escape so that it cannot enters the retort together with the advanced material. When the piston retracts, its end goes back a little over the front edge of the lower funnel opening, whereby dust and shredded quantities of the material are scraped off with each piston stroke. This prevents the piston from being blocked.
The charge material pushed forward and compressed by the piston, which is freed from the admixed air by the compression, forms a tight seal of the retort within the neck 10a, so that no vapors can escape from the interior of the retort through the neck.
At the other, lower end of the retort, a perforated hub 32, which rests in a bearing 34 by means of an axis 33, serves to support it. The latter is carried by a bracket 35 attached to the retort head 19. The bearing 34 is expediently arranged to be adjustable. The axis 33 is passed through a stuffing box 19a of the retort head.
The lower part of the hollow retort head 19 forms a pocket 36 which opens into a lower tube 37 lying transversely to the retort. In this tube there is a screw 38 which drives the charred material that has fallen from the retort into a funnel 37a which is provided with a removable cover 37b. From this funnel the material (see FIG. 2) enters a cylinder tube 39 in which a piston 27a compresses the material to be emptied in the same way as the above-mentioned piston 27, pushes it forward and frees it from the gas carried along. As with the piston 27, the crank mechanism of this piston is closed by a housing which is attached to the end of the tube 39. The cylinder tube 39 opens into a container 41.
The gases and vapors released from the load in the retort pass from the upper part of the retort head 19 through a pipe 42 into a compressor 43. From there, the compressed products are discharged to the outside through a siphon pipe, while the non-compressed gases are passed through a pipeline to the furnace and burned there.
