Description

Blitzschutzvorrichtung.
In unserem österreichischen Privilegium vom 30.

Lightning protection device.
In our Austrian Privilegium of May 30, 1896, Reg. Vol. 46, p. 2141, we use relays to open or close any number of circuits from any location that is spatially distant from these circuits. In practice it has been found that it is necessary to protect the relays from atmospheric discharges, and the lightning protection device described below is intended to serve this purpose.
The iron body of the relay, which carries the coil B of the relay, is screwed onto the porcelain base A. The current for exciting the same is supplied through the two terminals C1 and C2. Two springs made of brass are attached to these clamps, into which a rod 7), consisting of a relatively poor electrical conductor, is clamped. The material used for this is graphite or carbon powder in a corresponding mixture with non-conductors.
As can be seen from the circuit diagram, this rod is connected to the coil in Kebensphius5; Since its resistance is a multiple of the winding of the coil, the greater part of the direct current flowing through to excite the relay will go through the voltage windings, while in atmospheric discharges the self-induction of the coil opposes it with a much greater resistance than that of the self-induction-free resistance rod.
