<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the production of plastic masses from yeast and formaldehyde.
In the parent patent no. 67699 a process is under protection in which yeast or yeast residues, in particular those that remain in the production of nutritional extracts from yeast, are processed into plastic masses by mixing with aldehydes, in particular formaldehyde.
The present invention now relates to modifications and embodiments of this method, by means of which the application possibilities of the method are expanded, the method is simplified and the products to be achieved by the method are improved.
The process consists in that the yeast masses treated with the aldehydes, especially formaldehyde, possibly with additives to be described later, are first dried, crushed and then shaped by pressing at high temperature and high pressure.
The drainage can be effected in different ways. For example, if you are only dealing with yeast or yeast residues, you treat them with formaldehyde and dry the mixture directly. But if one turns for the purpose of; Modification of the properties of the product to be achieved in addition to the yeast precipitable proteins, then the dewatering or drying is accomplished depending on the properties

brings substances to the yeast to precipitate and then the precipitate formed
Possibility of dehydrating or drying and then, after appropriate treatment with formaldehyde, shaped by pressing in the heat. If, for example, albumin has been used in addition to yeast, then the mixture is coagulated by boiling, the coagulating albumin being the

When using casein solutions or pseudo-solutions in the

Precipitation by adding acids., 1- The process can also be carried out in such a way that dry yeast is used from the outset. This is important in that it makes the process of the
Production site of the yeast becomes independent, since the dry yeast on the one hand is durable enough to allow shipping, on the other hand also has the advantage that no

the appearance occurs.
The process works like this with dry yeast; that the dry yeast is treated with formaldehyde, which can be achieved by moistening it with aqueous formaldehyde solution or by treating it with gaseous formaldehyde, or by mixing it with; Polymerization stages of formaldehyde can happen. The raw material obtained in this way is then, if necessary, dried and then pressed with heating.
Another embodiment of the process, by means of which end products with modified properties are also obtained, consists in adding phenols to the raw masses of yeast or yeast protein mixtures before treatment with the formaldehyde
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and the resulting mixtures are treated with formaldehyde in the manner described, dried and hot-pressed.
As such, it is known to subject mixtures of a protein, namely albumin or casein with phenols, to treatment with formaldehyde, but the known proposals are either initially prepared compounds of albumin or casein with a phenol, which possibly by the wet way, to subsequently harden with formaldehyde or to add the formaldehyde directly to a common solution of albumin and phenol in formic acid and to recover the product by evaporation. In contrast, according to the invention, a mixture of yeast and phenol is first treated with formaldehyde and dried, possibly in the presence of other protein substances, and then processed into a plastic mass by hot pressing.
To further modify the properties of the product to be achieved, tars and tar constituents such as tar oils can be added, which, depending on their composition, not only act mechanically on the physical properties of the product to be achieved, but also according to the aldehydes, ketones or phenols contained therein participate in the reaction. The addition of tar residues, pitch and sulfur also has a changing effect on the physical properties of the mass to be achieved.
Of course, in the embodiment of the method according to the present invention, a wide variety of fillers can be used to modify the properties of the product to be achieved, as well as substances such as glue, resins, cellulose esters and the like,
Some examples for the implementation of the method are given below: x. x kg of yeast pulp of 1 / e dry matter is heated to kill the yeast through the heating and then mixed with x50 g of 40% of commercially available formaldehyde. The
