Method for making a feed from tree needles.
The needles of spruce, fir, and pine and similar trees have been used as fodder for a long time; the needles were dried, ground and given as supplementary forage. In Sweden, too, the

Remove retained volatile turpentine oil by treating with steam. However, this measure is by no means sufficient to achieve digestible feed, because the needles, which are only superficially changed, form lumps in the animal's stomach, which cause attacks of colic, which easily cause death in the weakened condition of the animals. In order to obtain a usable animal feed, one has to proceed as follows: The branches of the conifers are dried and the needles are mechanically stripped and then ground.
The needle meal obtained in this way is mixed with a certain amount of uncomminuted needles and extracted in extractors with benzene or another resin solvent. After the extraction is complete, the uncomminuted needles are separated off by sieving and the resin-free needle meal is treated several times with hot water, if necessary under increased pressure. After this extraction is complete, the flour is further saccharified by treating it with dilute acids under pressure, which sugar can possibly be left in the flour after neutralization of the acid or it can be fermented on alcohol. If necessary, however, needle meal can also be used

Water, since it significantly increases the digestible protein content.
The extract obtained in this way can be used for tanning, while a turpentine-like oil can be obtained from the extracted resin by treatment with steam.
PATENT CLAIMS: i A process for producing a feed from needles, characterized in that ground needles are first extracted with resin solvents and then treated and washed several times with hot water, advantageously under pressure.
