Description

Process for the preparation of dry leuco compounds of dyes.

Leuco compounds of dyes have previously been dried by evaporation in an inert gas stream or in a vacuum. In addition to other inconveniences, this method has the disadvantage that, towards the end of the operation, compact masses easily form in the usual evaporation apparatus, which are difficult to use and extremely retain the last remnants of water.

It has now been found that leuco compounds can advantageously be evaporated in such a way that they are atomized to form a very fine mist and a stream of hot air is directed towards it. The air does not have an oxidizing effect because the time
 EMI1.1
Document No. 194136 a process is given, according to which solutions of leuco or hydro compounds are converted into fine droplets by means of an atomizer and brought into contact with a stream of air, just to bring about an oxidation to the dyes in question.

The leuco compound can be used in dissolved or deposited form, with or without the addition of protective substances such as syrup, dextrin, etc.

   Example:
200 kg indigo white paste of 23% pure content are mixed well with 20 kg molasses.

The mixture is atomized through suitable devices (nozzle, rotating plate, etc.) into the finest mist and an air stream heated to 100 to 1250 is countered. The product falls down immediately as a dry powder (dryness 99'7%). It is extremely durable and becomes pasty immediately with water. Depending on the molasses content, the product has an indigo white content corresponding to 70 to y / o indigo. Instead of indigo white, derivatives of the same, thioindigo white or other leuco compounds can be used, other additives instead of molasses, and any additives can also be omitted.

The present process differs from the process of French patent specification No. 461446 mainly in that air instead of inert, oxygen-free gases is fed in countercurrent to the goods to be dried, which makes the whole process extremely cheaper and simplifies the apparatus to a great extent.
