  Verfahren zum Umschmelzen von Metallen. 



   Es ist schon vorgeschlagen worden, beim Schmelzen von Metallen im elektrischen Ofen als eine der Elektroden einen Stab aus dem zu schmelzenden Metall zu verwenden, von der der Lichtbogen auf das geschmolzene Metall im Tiegel übergeht. 



   Nach vorliegender Erfindung bestehen beide Elektroden aus dem umzuschmelzenden Metall und beide sind durch ein geeignetes schmelzbares Isoliermaterial voneinander getrennt, das eine Schlacke bildet. Ein erwärmter Tiegel wird unter die Elektroden gestellt, so dass das geschmolzene Metall in denselben tropft. Die Stäbe werden zweckmässig parallel zueinander angeordnet. Da das Metall allmählich geschmolzen wird und in den Tiegel tropft, so ist das erhaltene Produkt vollkommen homogen, während das durch den Lichtbogen geschmolzene Isoliermaterial eine Schlacke bildet. 



   Dieses Verfahren ist besonders für die Anfertigung kleiner Gussstücke, z. B. aus feinstem Stahl, geeignet, wobei es darauf ankommt, dass die Zusammensetzung ganz genau bestimmt und die Homogenität vollkommen ist. 



   Die beiden Elektroden können aus demselben Metall bestehen ; in diesem Falle besteht der Vorgang in einer Reinigung und Vergleichmässigung, weil die in den Elektroden enthaltenen Verunreinigungen verflüchtigt werden, so dass das Produkt von ihnen befreit wird. 



   Die beiden Elektroden können auch aus verschiedenen Metallen bestehen ; das Produkt ist dann eine Legierung oder ein Gemisch. In manchen Fällen können auch Bestandteile der Legierung in der isolierenden Substanz enthalten sein. Die Operation kann, wenn gewünscht, in einer indifferenten Gasatmosphäre durchgeführt werden. In manchen Fällen können überdies mehr als zwei Stäbe verwendet werden.

Since the metal is gradually melted and drips into the crucible, the product obtained is perfectly homogeneous, while the insulating material melted by the arc forms a slag.

   The two electrodes can be made of the same metal; In this case, the process consists of cleaning and leveling, because the impurities contained in the electrodes are volatilized, so that the product is freed from them.
