Description

  Bearings for rolling mills.

So far, plain bearings have been used in rolling mills without exception. The journals of the rollers are largely made of cast iron and some of cast steel. The bearing shells are mostly made of bronze or white metal, in rare cases, in lighter rolling mills, also made of wood.

All these plain bearings have the known disadvantage that the sliding surfaces of both the bearing and the journal wear out quickly, as a result of which the relative position of the rollers against each other changes during the rolling process and the dimensions of the rolled piece are different. To compensate for wear, the bearings must therefore be readjusted frequently.

According to the present invention, roller bearings with very little wear are to be used in place of the heavily worn plain bearings. The hard steel surfaces of the journal bearings practically do not wear out, so the position of the rolls remains secure and all rolled sections in the profile have the same dimensions. All work for the
 EMI1.1
 parts for operation.

The use of rolling friction instead of sliding friction saves a great deal of work, since especially in rolling mills, due to the large number of bearings, bearing friction often requires more than half the rolling work.

In times of bronze mangei, roller bearings made of steel are a means of eliminating the consumption of every bearing composition (saving metals).

The roller bearings are designed in a closed manner as roller or ball bearings, in contrast to the previous versions of the bearings as open half-shells.

Circulating lubrication is also made possible by means of the roller bearings. The closed bearing housing protects the journal from direct exposure to heat, from the flushing effect of the cooling water, and this also prevents the flaking roller sinter (hammer blow) from penetrating the bearing.
