Process and apparatus for the complete washing out of benzene and its
Homologues along with naphthalene from coke oven gases freed from ammonia.

In most cases, rack washers are used to absorb or wash out the benzene and homologues and naphthalene from the coke oven gases by means of washing oils. in isolated cases, where the pressure conditions allow, column washers are also installed. In spite of the large dimensions which have recently been given to the rack washers in order to achieve more complete washing, the benzene washing in the winter months is only significantly less around 90 to 920 ou in the summer months.

The reason for the incomplete washing out of the benzene is to be found in the fact that it turns out to be not feasible to take gas and washing oil with the washers

supplied at the lowest possible temperature,
Various methods have been used to achieve complete leaching:

there are u. a. Cooling machines have been installed to cool the washing oil and other things, but the success has fallen short of expectations. because a cooling of the gas below 20 to 24 "C \ before entering the benzene scrubber itself
 EMI1.2
When the ammonia was washed out after the actual tar separation, there was not enough tar as a solvent for naphthalene and as a result the pipes behind the ammonia washers could easily become clogged with naphthalene. For this reason, further cooling of the gas and thus the prior, more complete separation of naphthalene required for good benzene leaching is required.

The procedure described below is intended to remedy the aforementioned deficiencies, provided that the appropriate cooling jacket is available.

In order to be able to separate the benzene and its homologues more completely from the coke oven gases than it is in the previously known tray washer systems and column

Column washer passed through one or more prewashers, which are set up in such a way that they simultaneously serve as coolers and scrubbers by moving between a number of coiled pipe layers, which are individually or in bundles in the most varied of ways

    PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for the complete washing out of benzene and its homologues together with naphthalene from coke oven gases freed from ammonia, characterized in that the warm gases are passed into rack prewashers provided with cooling devices, while avoiding significant cooling, before they are introduced into the actual benzene washer, in which gas and detergent are cooled at the same time during the washing out of benzene and naphthalene.
