Device for the production of doubles for holding precious stones in an open form on both sides.
Precious stones that are to be cut or polished are fastened in a holder, a so-called double, by cementing or pouring in, in such a way that the surface to be cut protrudes over the double surface. There are also doubles, which enable the grinding of a whole series of facets without re-clamping the stone and in this case the stone to be cut must be set exactly in the axis of the doublet so that the facets are in the correct position with respect to the doublet when turning the doublet Axis of the stone preserved.

Easily fusible metal, in which the stone to be cemented in the double is held and set in a double shape by two clamping rods which reach through the ends of the double shape and allow the exact regulation of the position of the stone in the mold.
If the double is in the shape of a cone,! One rod reaches through the tip and the other through the base of the mold. The rods are expediently displaceable in the axis of the double so that they are both lifted together over the mold and in this position that

Bolts are provided with lock nuts, which lie against the side walls of the foot 7 and adjust the inner ends of the rails 33 so that they determine the position of the end of the rod 29 against which the rails rest. The inner ends of the rails 33 have downwardly sloping surfaces 36 (FIG. 4), so that their upper edges only come into contact with the rod 29. If some of the metal cast into the mold penetrates into the slots for guiding the rails 33, only thin ribs are formed which can easily be removed from the doublet.
In the case shown, the radial rails 33 press against the upper rod 29, but can of course also come into contact with the lower rod 19 or both rods.
In order to clamp a stone 38 in the mold, the rod 19 is raised until its upper flat end protrudes over the mold from which the upper mold has been removed.
The stone is then placed on the rod 19 and the upper rod 29 is moved down onto the upper surface of the stone and secured in this position by pulling the clamp 26. The lower end of the rod 29 has a cavity 37 or a cup shape so that the rod can hold the stone in place. The rod 21 is then lowered and rims the rods 19 and 29 with it in order to attach the stone to the

set the lower end of the rod 29 and the upper part of the stone in the center of the mold.
The stones, which are already provided with sanded panels and domes (upper and lower end surfaces), are correctly adjusted in shape in this way. The double metal is then poured through the upper mold after it is placed on the lower mold, fills the cavity of the mold and secures the stone at the top of the double. The rod 29 can, depending on what appears expedient, remain in its position while the metal is being poured in, or it can be pulled out beforehand.
When removing the doublet with the stone cast in it, the rails 33 are pushed outwards by the action on the inclined end faces, if they have not been withdrawn beforehand, or the rails can also be withdrawn by the lower ends of the rods 34 against pushes the foot 7 back.
It is desirable to provide some means of preventing accidental displacement of the rails 33. Friction devices can be used for this purpose, a simple embodiment of which is shown in FIG. These consist of pushers 43 loaded by spring 42, which lie against the underside of the rail and are attached in bores in the foot below the rails 33.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 5, 6 and 7, the rod 19 carried by the ann 20 extends only into the chamber 17 and is at the top by a ball and ball.
