Galvanic element of the Mercury oxide type.
Both salts and alkali hydroxide have been proposed as electrolytes for galvanic elements with zinc anode and depolarization by mercury oxide, alone or in conjunction with other depolarizing agents and usually in a mixture with an indifferent conductor (graphite or the like). The solution was a comparatively weak one, and sodium hydroxide was especially thought of as the hydroxide, because it is generally considered to be electrochemically equivalent to potassium hydroxide, but is preferred in practice because of its lower price and atomic weight.
From the experiments on which the present invention is based, it emerges that the above-mentioned mercury oxide elements with regard to constancy, capacity, reducibility of the volume, etc., can be significantly improved by a special type and nature of the electrolyte, and that a mercury oxide-graphite mass as a depoiarizer in elements The properties of the alkaline electrolyte and zinc anode were only fully exploited in this way.
EMI1.1
accumulation of material (and potential energy) - disturbances in the normal process at the anode occur and without a deposition of alkali zincate taking place. The
EMI1.2
superior combinations, both with and without mercury dioxide and with or without an alkaline electrolyte.
The tests also prove that the addition of thickening agents (starch or the like) required for dry cement, pocket cement, etc. does not change the above-mentioned conditions.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Galvanic element of the Mercury oxide type with zinc anode and alkaline electrolyte, characterized in that this is concentrated alkali.
