Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Gaivanic element whose depolarization mass consists of an internal mixture of a manganese-oxygen compound with graphite.
The present invention relates to a galvanic element which is characterized by high performance with low weight and a long service life not previously achieved. These properties are achieved in that the depolarizing substance is not made from a common superoxide, e.g. B. brownstone, or from a suitable sulfate, chloride or the like. But from the electrically very conductive, dark brown manganese
EMI1.1
consists.
If this, a light, dark brown powder, is intimately mixed with finely powdered charcoal (graphite) and used as a depolarization electrode in the usual way in a porous shell with solid charcoal, zinc, in ammonium nitrate or ammonium chloride solution or the like an element whose recovery capacity is greater than that of the éclanche element.
As mentioned, however, it is necessary to use the dark brown manganese hydrate, since only this has the stated excellent effect. On the other hand, the light (yellow) manganese hydrate, as it is obtained directly by precipitation from solutions, cannot be considered because of its poor conductivity.
The dark brown manganese oxide hydrate, which is directly effective in elements, is produced, for example, by adding sodium hydroxide solution to manganese liquor and letting the resulting precipitate turn dark brown in oxygen-rich air or, in order to obtain the dark brown manganese oxide hydrate required for an element more quickly, the aforementioned
EMI1.2
Liquid, e.g. B. brings sodium hypochlorite. In this way, a dark brown manganese oxide hydrate quickly develops, which also has only about a third of the specific weight of manganese dioxide.
Just as little is the black-gray manganese superoxide hydrate into consideration, as such z. B. is proposed in German Patent No. 144397, because this material, as the aforementioned patent warns, is a non-conductor and therefore does not give good results.
