Galvanic element, whose depolarization mass consists of an intimate mixture of a manganese-oxygen compound with graphite.
In patent no. 67422 an element is identified whose essential difference from the known elements with a manganese oxide-containing depolarizer is that the depolarizing agent used is a highly conductive, dark brown manganese hydrate.
As already stated in the patent no. 67422, only the dark brown hydrate of manganese oxide has shown the excellent conductivity, while both the light (yellow) and the gray-black superoxide hydrate are very poor conductors or non-conductors and consequently only give an insignificant current output under otherwise identical conditions . The manganese peroxide hydrate added to the depolarizer according to German patent specification No. 144397 is of this type, as is clearly evident from the information in the description.
However, through detailed investigations it has been found that under certain conditions a superoxide hydrate can also be obtained which has just as excellent electrical conductivity as the dark brown manganese hydrate and which consequently not only has the same effect as the dark brown hydrate, but also that due to its higher oxygen content in terms of voltage still exceeds (1 # 7 volts against 1-6 volts).
A black manganese superoxide hydrate of considerably greater effect than manganese dioxide or "artificial superoxide" according to German patent specification No. 144397, which does not conduct electricity and dissipates a lower voltage than manganese dioxide, is obtained if manganese liquor is mixed with sodium bicarbonate, or but potassium permanganate dissolves in cold, concentrated sulfuric acid and the liquid is then diluted with water. In this way, a black powder of constant composition arises with the formula
EMI1.1
This manganese peroxide hydrate has the properties of a weak acid, thus conducts electricity and, when mixed with graphite, gives a depolarization mass of
EMI1.2
so that it is also superior to the dark brown manganese oxide hydrate.
In the further pursuit of these investigations it has been shown that all dark brown and all deep black hydrates are good conductors, while the light hydrates or the gray-black superoxide hydrates are poor conductors and only give poor performance.
