Die von dem Verdichtungsgrad abhängige Temperatursteigerung kann deshalb auch bei Verdichtung auf hohen Druck derart abgepasst werden, dass die Temperatur niemals bis auf eine für die empfindlichen Teile des Hochdruckzylinders, wie Kolbenpackung, Ventilfedern, schädliche Höhe steigt. Dies ist für die Betriebssicherheit des Kompressors von grosser Bedeutung. Um eine vollständige Dichtung zwischen dem Kolben 11 und dem Zylinder 2 zu bewirken, können nämlich Dichtungsringe aus Metall nicht verwendet werden, sondern der Kolben muss mit Manschetten aus Leder. Vulkanfiber oder dgl. versehen werden, die von dem Druck im Zylinder gegen die Zylinderwandung gepresst werden.
Bei Verdichtung auf sehr hohe Drücke könnte die Temperatur im Zylinder 2 bis auf eine solche Höhe steigen, dass die Packung verbrannt werden würde, falls der Hochdruckzylinder nicht mit Luft gleichen Druckes von dem Luftbehälter 3 gespeist und der Verdichtungsgrad im Zylinder 2 dadurch innerhalb berechneter Grenzen erhalten werden würde. Durch die Vereinigung beider Arten von Zylindern wird somit eine betriebssichere Kompressoranlage geschaffen.
