Process for working with hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gas mixtures under pressure at elevated temperature, in particular for the catalytic production of ammonia from the elements.

When working with hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gas mixtures in heal, iron apparatus, these lose their mechanical strength with continuous use and ultimately become unusable or, especially if they have large dimensions, cannot be used without danger.

In patent no. 62214 it has been shown that one can work in iron apparatus without these difficulties, if one takes care that the temperature of the hot. pressure-bearing iron wall at one point significantly exceeds 450 C.

It has now been found that the difficulties mentioned can also be countered in this way
 EMI1.1
carbon free or low carbon alloy steels are used.

It has also been found, surprisingly, that alloy steels can also be used which contain a relatively large amount of carbon. Unless the amounts of the alloyed metals are too small, e.g. B. chromium, vanadium, tungsten. Molybdenum and the like are present, the strength of the apparatus is surprisingly retained even if, due to the action of hydrogen, some or all of the carbon is converted into gaseous
