Process for making ammonia from the elements.

For the production of ammonia from the elements with the help of catalysts, when using metals whose oxides, etc. can be reduced by hydrogen, such as iron, cobalt, nickel, molybdenum, tungsten, etc., it appears safe to use gases from the outset that Contain small amounts of water vapor or gases that form water with the hydrogen, such as oxygen. It has even been considered several times that only moist gases are capable of forming ammonia (cf. Ramsay and Young, Journ.
 EMI1.1
Technical ammonia synthesis suitable temperatures of about 600 and below give the best yields if the nitrogen-hydrogen gas mixture of water (both of water vapor, as well as of fine water droplets, as z.

   B. from washing machines with aqueous liquids) and is practically completely freed from water-forming components. This applies both to working under increased pressure and, even more so, to working under atmospheric pressure.

In scientific work on the ammonia equilibrium at very high temperatures, the nitrogen-hydrogen mixture was dried and freed of oxygen, but only for the purpose of absorbing part of the ammonia formed by the water that was formed at the same time, and thus an error in the exact accuracy to avoid analytical determination of the ammonia formed (cf. Jost, Ztschr. f. anorg. Chemie. Vol. 57. 1908, p. 420); In fact, drying has no other meaning here, since at the high temperatures used, any moisture does not have any influence on the amount of ammomak formed.

An expedient form of gas treatment consists in directing the responsible gas at normal pressure or in a compressed state over heated palladium asbestos and then over burnt lime or the like, but any other suitable method for releasing water and oxygen can also be used depending on the circumstances can be applied.
