Method of sterilizing water with ultraviolet light.

For the purposes of water sterilization, the only light source proposed so far has been quartz silver lamps in which the arc burns in an envelope made of completely transparent quartz glass. Even if such lamps in and of themselves produce perfect success, their use is nevertheless fraught with disadvantages which are of considerable importance for practical operation. On the one hand, these lamps are extremely expensive because of their difficult manufacturing process, which consists of welding individual rings together to form the robr-shaped lamps. On the other hand, in spite of all this, the durability of these lamps is only a fairly limited one, since the lamps are quite fragile despite their complicated manufacturing process.

According to the invention, these disadvantages are significantly reduced by using quartz lamps made of opaque, cloudy quartz glass to generate the ultraviolet rays. which was previously generally considered to be impermeable to ultraviolet rays and therefore useless for photochemical or sterilization purposes. The invention is based on the knowledge gained through extensive comparative experiments that this type of (quartz glass allows ultraviolet rays to pass through practically to the same extent as the completely transparent material used hitherto.

Furthermore, the invention is based on the knowledge that the use of cloudy quartz glass means that the disadvantages of the lamps used up to now are significant
 EMI1.1
the lamps get a greater homogeneity of the material, which gives them greater strength and it is also possible. Manufacture lamps of much larger dimensions than was previously possible and customary.

Accordingly, the quality of the lamps is not only higher for the purpose of water sterilization, but their use makes the entire operation more economical, insofar as not only the installation costs are reduced, but also the durability of the lamps is greater on the one hand, and also due to the lightness on the other Machinability of the new material the repair costs are significantly reduced.
