Description

Process for the extraction of copper from copper sulphide ores.

In the process of roasting and leaching copper sulphide ores with subsequent electrolytic precipitation of the copper, it has been proposed to carry out only partial roasting, so that a part of the copper is present after roasting in the form of sulphide, which is dissolved by means of iron oxide salts, which in the Electrolysis arise.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a modified mode of operation for carrying out such methods. Roasting, carried out in the usual way, has the result that lumps or cores are formed, which mainly consist of copper sulphides, and with subsequent leaching with iron oxide salts it is impossible to dissolve all these hard cores. It has now been found that a small addition of any alkali salt to the ore prior to roasting goes a long way towards preventing the formation of such hard, insoluble cores.

An addition of 2 to 5% seems to be sufficient for this and it also seems that it is irrelevant which salt is added, since most of the salts are converted into sulfates during the processes taking place in the furnace.

The explanation for this effect of the alkali metal should be sought therein. that the sulphate in question combines with copper sulphate to form an easily fusible compound that is capable of dissolving sulphides. and therefore penetrates into the interior of the sulphide nuclei, so that the nuclei become porbs or spongy. when the leaching liquid comes into effect on them. It is therefore clear that the alkali salt can be recovered and used repeatedly.

This invention is particularly valuable in the extraction of copper from kiesal) fires, where it is necessary to bring about as complete an extraction as possible in order to have the material available as iron ore after the copper has been leached.
