Description

Process for the production of durable, solid perborate mixtures from sodium perborate and a solid acid salt which develop hydrogen peroxide with water.

The effectiveness of sodium perborate in aqueous solution as a disinfectant is based on its ability to dissociate into hydrogen peroxide and boric acid salt. Since the sodium perhorate is sparingly soluble and only partially dissociated, its full effect only occurs when the hydrogen peroxide is freed from the salt by adding dilute acids. This dissociation was achieved by adding phosphoric acid or acid salts to the aqueous solutions of sodium perborate. It was against it
 EMI1.1
with acidic agents, as these mixtures completely decompose in a short time. Recently Byk (French patent no.

April 1909) sought to avoid this excess by mixing dehydrated sodium perborate with sodium bitartrate. However, this mixture also has a disadvantage insofar as the dehydrated sodium perborate naturally strives to become saturated again with water and thus to convert into the decomposing mixture: the salt mixture is said to be hygroscopic and must therefore be stored carefully.

According to all available experience, sodium perborate is the most stable form
 EMI1.2

So far, however, it has not been possible to produce durable mixtures of this particular salt with acidic salts. It has now been found that the well crystallizing sodium salts of the sulfo-
 EMI1.3
 and sulfobenzoessures soda disintegrate.

Example: 10 kg of crystallized sodium perborate are mixed with 14 6 kg of acid sulfobenzoate to form a fine powder. 12 g of this mixture in 100 cm3 of water correspond to a one percent solution of hydrogen peroxide, which at the same time contains 1,8% boric acid.
