<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The invention relates to an internal combustion engine, preferably with an exhaust gas turbocharger, the compressor part of which is arranged in an inlet flow path and the turbine part of which is arranged in an outlet flow path, with an exhaust gas recirculation line between the outlet flow path and the inlet flow path, which opens into the inlet flow path, the exhaust gas recirculation line from the outside branches off downstream of a particle filter.
An internal combustion engine is known from the Austrian utility model application GM 444/99, in which the exhaust gas recirculation line branches off from the outlet flow path downstream of a particle filter and opens into the inlet flow path downstream of an air filter. However, this has the disadvantage that, in the event of abrasion or a rupture, parts of the particle filter that split off can reach the charge air cooler and / or the combustion chamber via the exhaust gas recirculation line and the inlet flow path, and thus can damage the internal combustion engine.
The object of the invention is to prevent damage to the internal combustion engine by breaking parts in the outlet flow path.
This is achieved according to the invention in that the exhaust gas recirculation line has an additional filter or opens into the inlet flow path upstream of a filter device. The filter device can catch smaller and larger chipping parts and thus effectively prevent damage to the engine.
In a very simple embodiment variant of the invention, it can be provided that the exhaust gas recirculation line opens into the inlet flow path upstream of the air filter. If necessary, the air filter forming the filter device has to be reinforced in order to reliably retain any particles that may splinter off.
Alternatively, it can be provided that the exhaust gas recirculation line between the air filter and an additional filter forming the filter device opens into the inlet flow path. A separate additional filter thus takes over the retention function of fragments that split off.
In a continuation of this variant, it can further be provided that the exhaust gas recirculation line opens into a main inlet flow path of the inlet flow path which is bypassable by a bypass line, the filter device preferably being arranged in the main inlet flow path. If there is no exhaust gas recirculation, the confluence of the exhaust gas recirculation line into the main inlet flow path and the additional filter can be avoided, so that in this operating mode additional flow losses as a result of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
block filter can be avoided. This advantage also exists if the additional filter is arranged directly in the exhaust gas recirculation line.
Particularly high exhaust gas recirculation rates can be achieved if the exhaust gas recirculation line has a pitot tube in the region of the branch from the outlet flow path, via which the exhaust gas coming from the outlet flow path flows into the exhaust gas recirculation line. As an alternative or in addition, provision can be made for the exhaust gas recirculation line to open into the inlet flow path via a nozzle diffuser unit.
If appropriate, it can further be provided that the exhaust gas recirculation cooler can be operated via a cooling circuit decoupled from the engine cooling circuit. This relieves the load on the engine cooling system and enables particularly low exhaust gas recirculation temperatures.
In order to avoid corrosion in the exhaust gas recirculation cooler due to condensed sulfur compounds, the exhaust gas recirculation cooler is preferably arranged higher than the branch of the exhaust gas recirculation line, so that the condensed water flows back into the outlet flow path. Alternatively or additionally, a condensate sump made of corrosion-resistant material can be provided in order to avoid corrosion due to the formation of condensate in the exhaust gas recirculation cooler. The condensate that may form in the cooler at lower operating temperatures is evaporated or transported at higher temperatures and higher flow velocities.
Furthermore, the use of particularly low-sulfur fuel with a sulfur content of less than 50 ppm can effectively prevent the occurrence of corrosion in the outlet flow path, the exhaust gas recirculation line and in the inlet flow path, and in the components arranged therein.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the figures.
1 shows an internal combustion engine according to the invention in a first embodiment, and FIGS. 2 to 4 internal combustion engines according to the invention in further advantageous embodiments.
Components with the same function are provided with the same reference symbols in the design variants.
The internal combustion engine 1 for a plurality of cylinders 2 has an intake manifold 3 and an exhaust manifold 4. The charge air line 5 of an inlet flow path 6 opens into the inlet header 3, a charge air cooler 7 being arranged in the charge air line 5. The turbine part 9 of an exhaust gas turbine 10 is arranged in the exhaust flow path 8 starting from the exhaust manifold 4. The compressor part 11 is located in the inlet flow path 6.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
An exhaust gas recirculation line 12 branches off from the outlet flow path 8 downstream of the turbine part 9 and opens into the inlet flow path 6 upstream of the compressor part 11. The branching off of the exhaust gas recirculation line 12 from the outlet flow path 8 is denoted by 14 and takes place via a pitot tube 25 directed against the exhaust gas flow. The confluence of the exhaust gas recirculation line 12 into the inlet flow path 6 is denoted by 15. An exhaust gas recirculation valve 16 and an exhaust gas recirculation cooler 17 are arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation line 12. The branch 14 is located downstream of a particle filter 18, so that only particle-free or low-particle exhaust gas reaches the exhaust gas recirculation line 12.
To avoid corrosion in the exhaust gas recirculation cooler 17, this can be arranged higher than the branch 14, so that condensed water can flow back into the outlet flow path 8. Alternatively or in addition to this, the exhaust gas recirculation cooler 17 and the charge air cooler 7 can be designed with a condensate sump. In addition to or instead of these relatively complex measures, corrosion in components arranged in the outlet flow path 8, in the exhaust gas recirculation line 12 and in the inlet flow path 6 can be effectively avoided by using low-sulfur fuel. The sulfur content should be below 50 ppm.
Upstream of the particulate filter 18, a crankcase ventilation line 19 can open into the outlet flow path 8. As part of an exhaust gas engine brake device (not shown further), an exhaust gas throttle valve 20 can be arranged in the outlet flow path 8 between the turbine part 9 and the opening of the crankcase ventilation line 19. The exhaust gas throttle valve 24 downstream of the branch 14 can be at least partially closed to support the exhaust gas recirculation and to increase the amount of the recirculated exhaust gas.
In order to avoid that in the event of damage and failure of components in the outlet flow path 8, for example due to chipping of the filter material of the particle filter 18, or abrasion of very fine particles, in particular in the case of ceramic filters, ceramic dust or other particles, via the exhaust gas recirculation line 12 into the inlet flow path 6 and further into the compressor 11, as well as the charge air cooler 7 and the combustion chambers of the cylinders 2 and cause damage there, the confluence of the exhaust gas recirculation line 12 into the inlet flow path 6 is upstream in each of the embodiment variants shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 a filter device 26, or a filter 27 (see FIG. 4) is provided in the exhaust gas recirculation line 12.
In the embodiment variant according to FIG. 1, the filter device is formed by the air filter 23. It may be necessary to reinforce the filter material or an additional coarse filter in the air filter 23.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the embodiment variant shown in FIG. 2, the opening 15 is located between the air filter 23 and a filter device 26 formed by an additional filter 27.
FIG. 3 differs from the embodiment shown in FIG. 2 only in that the exhaust gas recirculation line 12 opens into the inlet flow path 6 via a nozzle diffuser unit 13.
The mouth 15 of the exhaust gas recirculation line 12 can be arranged in a main inlet flow path 6a, which can preferably be bypassed by a bypass line 21. A control valve 22 is arranged in the bypass line 21 for control purposes, as shown in broken lines in FIGS. 2 and 3.
FIG. 4 shows a variant of the embodiment according to FIG. 2 with an additional filter 27 arranged directly in the exhaust gas return line 12.
The fact that the outlet of the exhaust gas recirculation line 12 in the inlet flow path 6 is arranged upstream of a filter device 26, or an additional filter is provided directly in the exhaust gas recirculation line, can effectively damage the internal combustion engine in the event of component failure and chipping of components, in particular of the particle filter 18. be avoided.
