Plant for the production of methane or mixtures of hydrogen and methane.

The present invention relates to a plant for the production of methane or of mixtures of hydrogen and methane by means of the known method of catalysis of water gas by heated nickel.

The system consists mainly of those used to generate water vapor

of the water base and to free it from carbonic acid, tubes to be charged with copper for the liberation of the water gas from sulfur compounds, tubes to be charged with nickel to effect the catalysis and a boiler for the recovery of the water

are. so that the fuel consumption required to carry out the process is reduced to the minimum.

An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown in the drawing. The water gas is produced in an apparatus 1 System Sanders with bent pipes or with straight horizontal pipes or, as shown in the drawing, inclined pipes 2.

The superheated water vapor is formed at 3 and comes through 4 via coke. Anthracite or

brought to the scrubber 9 by pumps 12, passing through the reservoir 13. The process can be continued in this way. The carbon dioxide emerging from the steam boiler can be liquefied in a known manner at 14 and then placed on the market.

J The de-carbonated gas. which from a mixture of carbon monoxide and
Hydrogen exists must be purified from sulfur compounds and is used for this purpose

 will.

The apparatus required for hydrogen bonding is formed from horizontal flat metal tubes 16 into which the nickel can be introduced through flat slides. These pipes are arranged in series and are heated by the hot gases coming from the water gas oven. The temperature can be checked with constant values using a thermometer or a pyrometer. It is also possible to use vertical cylinders in which the metal causing the catalysis is arranged on horizontal plates around which the gas circulates.

The hot gases leaving the water gases successively heat the tubes 2 used for the coal, then the cleaning tubes 15 charged with copper, then the tubes 16, the tubes 3 and finally the boiler 10 to decompose the sodium bicarbonate solution. The nickel which causes the catalysis is in powder form and is obtained by treating the commercially available nickel oxide with reducing gases. The reduction is carried out directly in the apparatus used for the process by using the mixture of carbon dioxide and hydrogen which comes out of the tubes filled with copper.

The reduction must be carried out at 3500 to 4500 C. The tubes or plates provided with a cylinder for the nickel are arranged in several series, which are independent of one another, so that a series can be emptied, filled and switched on again without interrupting the whole process. Hydrogen formation is preferably carried out at about 3500, although the temperature can vary between 300 and 4000 without being detrimental.
