Abstract

The invention relates to a method of reusing polystyrene and or polyvinyl chloride or products in which polystyrene and or polyvinyl chloride are at least partially contained, while at the same time preparing formaldehyde-free cellulose-containing compression- moulding compounds, which can be used inter alia for the production of hardboards, fibre boards or chipboards. For preparing the compression-moulding compounds, the substances used as binders, polystyrene and or polyvinyl chloride or materials which at least partially contain these substances, are softened by adding suitable solvents until they are of adequate viscosity to allow them to be mixed optimally with the expediently likewise solvent-pretreated cellulose-containing material. Then the compression-moulding compound is moulded and subsequently exposed to the effect of heat and pressure for curing. When using closed heat and pressing systems, the solvent(s) can for the most part be reclaimed by suction removal and condensation. Serving as materials to be recycled were, inter alia, commercially available foam panels, packaging, skirting boards, floor covering tiles, containers, insulating materials and so on, the consumer goods having been processed according to the specified method both in sorted form and in mixed form.

Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

   The invention relates to a process for the production of a molding compound for, for example, pressed, fiberboard or particle board, particles of a material to be pressed being brought into contact with a binder made of polystyrene or a polystyrene-containing compound and then pressed under the action of heat, and a process for the production of a molding compound for example for pressed, fiber or chipboard, particles of a material to be pressed brought into contact with a binder made of polyvinyl chloride or a polyvinyl chloride-containing mass and then pressed under the action of heat.

   It is known that urea-formaldehyde resins are predominantly used for the inexpensive production of, for example, cellulose-containing molding compounds. These binders split during processing and also later, e.g. B. when exposed to moisture, formaldehyde, so that under certain circumstances formaldehyde is released to the environment for years or, in extreme cases, the maximum permitted concentration in rooms equipped with such materials or the like can be exceeded.

  Since formaldehyde is irritating and causes allergies, it is necessary with regard to domestic and environmental hygiene not only to reduce the amount of free formaldehyde, but also to eliminate it completely by using equally suitable but environmentally friendly binders. At the same time, the problem of minimizing and disposing of ever increasing amounts of industrial and household waste arises in the field of environmental protection. Thermoplastic polymers such as B. polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride have so far mostly been stored in landfills or fed to thermal recovery in thermal power stations.

   Processing to produce consumer goods by renewed hot pressing of the previously usually shredded wastes has so far been seriously opposed, on the one hand, by the not inconsiderable expenditure of energy required for the thermal softening of the binders and, on the other hand, by a significant reduction in the quality of the recycling products, especially when using waste of a different type.

   The aim of the invention was therefore to develop a process for the recycling of polystyrene or products containing polystyrene or of polyvinyl chloride or products containing polyvinyl chloride, which process should also enable the production of formaldehyde-free, for example cellulose-containing molding compounds with the least possible expenditure of thermal energy. According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the substances used as binders, polystyrene and / or polyvinyl chloride or

  Materials which at least partially contain polystyrene and / or polyvinyl chloride, by adding solvents such as. As acetone, benzene, toluene, cyclo-hexanone, etc. are softened until their viscosity is sufficient for sufficient mixing with the particles to be pressed. The binder is then mixed intensively with the particles to be pressed using suitable mixers and stirrers, then molded and finally for faster evaporation of the solvent and for faster hardening of a solvent

 will. For better mixing of the viscous binder (s) with the material to be pressed, pretreatment of the particles to be pressed with the solvent (s) used to soften the binder (s) has proven to be advantageous.

   As the material to be recycled in the sense of the method, a. commercially available polystyrene foam sheets and Packaging and packaging of various dairy products, further PVC chair ledge u. Boards, insulating materials and the like, these wastes being sorted and mixed. Depending on the pressure and the relationship between the type of binder or the amount of binder and the amount of material pressed, the press pieces obtained proved to be sufficiently firm, easy to work with, only slightly water-absorbing and - especially with a higher proportion of binder - excellently suitable for e.g. T. very massive profile and structural pressures.
