<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to an internal combustion engine with an intake system and an exhaust system and an exhaust gas recirculation line branching off the exhaust system and leading to the intake system, an exhaust gas recirculation cooler being arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation line.
It is known to recycle a partial flow of the exhaust gas from the exhaust system into the intake system in order to reduce the NOX emissions in internal combustion engines. The NOx emissions are reduced directly during combustion, on the one hand by reducing the flame temperature and on the other hand by reducing the burning rate.
Thus, although the temperature of the intake fresh air / exhaust gas mixture is increased by the exhaust gas recirculation, the above-mentioned mechanisms have the effect of lowering the combustion gas temperature during the combustion. In order to further reduce NOx emissions, it is advantageous to additionally cool down both components of the sucked-in gas mixture (fresh air and recirculated exhaust gas) as far as possible. An internal combustion engine of this type is known for example from DE 43 19 380 Cl. The exhaust gas recirculation cooler is usually designed as a simple air / air or air / water heat exchanger without a working medium that changes the state of the unit.
From US 3,962,869 A and US 4,107,922 A an internal combustion engine with a heat pipe heat exchanger in the exhaust system is known, which extracts heat from the exhaust gas in the area of an exhaust manifold and supplies it to an exhaust gas reactor.
From RU 2 070 655 Cl an internal combustion engine with a heat pipe heat exchanger is known, which extracts heat from the exhaust gas of the exhaust system and supplies it to a carburetor of the intake system.
Heat pipe heat exchangers, which work according to the so-called heat pipe principle, have one or more closed and evacuated pipes. Each tube forms a closed cycle. The heat is transported through the circulation of a special working medium in the tube. Through constant evaporation and subsequent condensation of the evaporable working medium, for example methanol, the heat supplied at one end of the tube is released to a heat sink at the other end of the tube by condensation of the working medium. Heat pipe heat exchangers working according to the heat pipe principle allow a high degree of design freedom, can be made very compact and work with high efficiency, in particular with larger temperature differences.
The object of the invention is to enable a structurally simple and space-saving efficient cooling of the recirculated exhaust gas in an internal combustion engine of the type mentioned at the outset.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the invention, this is achieved in that the exhaust gas recirculation cooler is designed as a heat pipe heat exchanger and has at least one closed evacuated heat pipe filled with a working medium, the first end of which is arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation line and the second end of which is connected to a heat sink. The recirculated exhaust gas flows around the first end of each heat pipe arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation line. The gaseous or liquid cooling medium flows around the second end connected to a heat sink. The heat sink can be formed by the cooling circuit of the engine or the heating circuit for the vehicle interior.
The recirculated exhaust gas is cooled particularly well if the heat pipe heat exchanger has a plurality of heat pipes which are arranged in groups of at least two, preferably three, rows. The heat pipes are arranged radially to the exhaust gas recirculation line, so that the exhaust gas cooler can be made very compact.
In a particularly preferred embodiment variant of the invention it is provided that in the exhaust gas recirculation cooler the diameters and / or the immersion depths of the heat pipes in the recirculated exhaust gas and / or in the heat sink are different. Within one and the same exhaust gas recirculation cooler, the type of working medium and / or its fill level can also be different in at least two heat pipes, depending on the heat gradient of the exhaust gas recirculation cooler.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the figures.
1 shows a schematic drawing of the internal combustion engine according to the invention, FIG. 2 shows an oblique view of the heat pipe heat exchanger without an upper part in an embodiment variant, FIG. 3 shows a cross section of a heat pipe heat exchanger in an embodiment variant,
4 the cross section of the heat pipe heat exchanger in a further, air-cooled embodiment, FIG. 5 a partially sectioned view of a heat pipe heat exchanger in a third embodiment of an internal combustion engine according to the invention, FIG. 6 a top view of this heat pipe heat exchanger and FIG. 7 the Heat pipe heat exchanger in section along the line VII-VII in Fig. 5.
Functionally identical parts are provided with the same reference symbols in the design variants.
The internal combustion engine 1 shown schematically in FIG. 1 has an intake system 2 and an exhaust system 3. 2a denotes an inlet header of the inlet system 2 and 3a denotes an outlet header of the outlet system 3. For the return of exhaust gas, an exhaust gas recirculation line 4 branches off from the exhaust system 3 and opens into the intake system 2, it being possible for a nozzle-diffuser unit 5 to be arranged in the region of the mouth. The nozzle-diffuser unit 5 can optionally be designed to be bypassable via a bypass line 6, in which a control valve 7 is provided.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
To control the amount of the recirculated exhaust gas, an exhaust gas recirculation control valve 8 is arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation line 4. An exhaust gas recirculation cooler 9 is also provided in the exhaust gas return line 4, with which the temperature of the recirculated exhaust gas and thus the combustion chamber temperature can be further reduced in order to reduce the NOx emissions. The exhaust gas recirculation cooler 9 is designed as a heat pipe heat exchanger 10 and works on the principle of known heat pipe systems. The heat pipe heat exchanger 10 has a number of closed heat pipes 11, the interior of which is evacuated and contains an evaporable working medium 12, for example alcohol, water, etc.
The first end 13 of each heat pipe 11 is located in the exhaust gas recirculation line 4 and is flowed around by the recirculated exhaust gas indicated by the arrow 14, which forms the heat source H1 in the present case. The second end 15 of each heat pipe 11 is located in the area of a heat sink H2, which is formed by a cooling medium, for example water or air. In the case of liquid cooling medium in particular, the second end 15 can be located in a closed cooling channel 16 of a cooling circuit 17, which can be, for example, an engine cooling circuit or a heating circuit for the passenger compartment. A heat exchanger for dissipating the heat of the cooling circuit 17, for example the cooler or a heating radiator, is designated by reference numeral 18.
Fig. 4 shows an analogous embodiment to Fig. 3, wherein the second end 15 of the heat pipe 11 is cooled by air. The second end 15 is surrounded by cooling fins 19.
The exhaust gas 14 flowing in the exhaust gas recirculation line 4 heats the first end 13 of the heat pipe 11 and thus the working medium 12 contained therein, as a result of which the working medium 12 evaporates and extracts heat from the exhaust gas 14. The second end 15 is cooled by the heat sink H2 formed by the cooling medium, for example air or water, as a result of which the vaporous working medium 12 condenses in the region of the second end 15 and in the process releases heat to the cooling medium 20. The condensed working medium 12 slides along the inner wall due to the action of gravity down to the first end 13 of the heat pipe 11 and thus to the heat sink H1. This “free” circulation of the working medium can be along the entire length of the inner wall of the heat pipe are converted into a kind of "forced circulation".
The capillary body 22, which preferably consists of several layers of wire mesh or a porous metal sponge, improves both the transport of the condensed working medium 12 to the heat source H1 and the evaporation conditions.
The heat pipes 11 are advantageously arranged in groups of one, two or three rows 21 in the exhaust gas recirculation line 4.
FIG. 2 shows an arrangement with two rows 21 of heat pipes 11, FIG. 3 shows an arrangement with a row 21 of heat pipes 11 in cross section. The inflow angle α of the cooling medium 20 with respect to the longitudinal axis 4a of the exhaust gas recirculation line 4 can be freely selected in a wide range.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
5 to 7 show an embodiment variant of a heat pipe heat exchanger 10 with three rows 21 of heat pipes 11, two adjacent rows being arranged offset from one another, as can be seen from FIG. 6. In this embodiment variant too, the heat pipes 11 can be cooled by a cooling medium, for example air or water.
The male pipe heat exchanger 10 in the exhaust gas recirculation line 4 allows simple and effective cooling of the recirculated exhaust gas, with great design freedom in the design and arrangement of the heat pipes 11 in the choice of the cooling medium and its flow direction.
