Abstract

In an exhaust emission control system of an internal combustion engine with a catalytic converter, heat is extracted from the exhaust gases by means of a heat exchanger tube. In order to protect the catalytic converter against overheating, the vaporising zone of the uncontrolled heat exchanger tube in the exhaust gas flow is situated upstream of the catalytic converter and the catalytic converter housing.

Description

The invention relates to a cleaning system for the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine with the The preamble of claim 1 features specified.

Such a cleaning system is from DE-OS 22 43 428 known. In this known cleaning system the hot exhaust gases flow inside the catalytic converter and its casing before they heat through the heat pipe is withdrawn. So there is a risk that the exhaust gases overheat the catalytic converter via the inner housing and thereby damage or destroy. It also means Use of a regulated heat pipe increases space, weight and price.

The invention has for its object in a Cleaning system of the type mentioned Catalyst with higher safety and less effort to protect against overheating.

The task is in a cleaning system of the genus type according to the invention by the characterizing Features of claim 1 solved.

In the cleaning system designed according to the invention ensures that the exhaust gases are too hot to be cooled via the heat pipe before entering the kata lysator directly or through the housing to an unzu heat up casually high temperature and damage or can destroy. For heat dissipation there is a space and weight-saving unregulated heat pipe sufficient.

In the formation of the subject matter of the Claim 2 is through the use of multiple heat tubes, each of which can be made smaller, even cooling of the exhaust gases possible.

In claim 3 is a convenient place for cooling the condensation zone of the heat pipe, in addition usually supports the exhaust pipe higher location of this place the condensate reflux from the Condensation zone to the evaporation zone and thus the Heat conduction in the heat pipe.

Claim 4 shows an application according to the invention at a near the engine, so quickly starting, but also particularly hot Exhaust gas-endangered pre-catalyst, during the ent main catalyst further away is not a special one Protection against overheating is required.

In the following the invention is based on one in the Drawing shown embodiment closer explained.

The exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine 1 shown in a side view are collected in an exhaust manifold 2 and fed via a short exhaust pipe 3 to a pre-catalyst 4 , from which they pass through a further exhaust pipe 5 to a main catalytic converter 6 and from there via a silencer (not shown) into the open stream.

The exhaust pipe 3 is widened immediately upstream of the pre-catalyst 4 , so that a heat exchanger housing 7 is formed, which merges into the housing of the pre-catalyst 4 with the same diameter. In the heat exchanger housing 7 there are the evaporation zones 8 of several heat pipes 9 combined in a bundle, the condensation zones 10 of which are placed in an air-cooled heat exchanger 11 . The heat exchanger 11 is attached to the side of the internal combustion engine 1 with the cooling air passages approximately in the longitudinal direction thereof, so that cooling air conveyed by a fan 12 located in front of the internal combustion engine 1 and flowing past the internal combustion engine flows well through the cooling air passages and a large amount of heat from the condensation zones 10 of the heat pipes 9 can accommodate, cooling fins 13 at the condensation zones 10 still support this heat absorption. The heat transport within the heat pipes 9 is supported in that its condensation zones 10 within the heat exchanger 11 are higher than its evaporation zones 8 within the heat exchanger housing 7 . This makes it possible, above a certain limit temperature, which depends on the boiling point of the heat carrier within the heat pipes, to withdraw a large amount of heat from the exhaust gases before they reach the catalytic converter 4 or its housing, so that it is effectively protected against overheating.
