<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The invention relates to a switching intake manifold for an internal combustion engine with a switching element for changing the intake length of at least one intake flow path starting from a collecting space. with a first switching position assigned to a long flow path and a second switching position assigned to a short flow path, wherein in the first switching position an intake pipe is connected to the collecting space via the long flow path and the suction pipe is connected to the collecting space by bypassing the long flow path.
EMI1.1
switch resonance effective intake pipe lengths and thereby achieve a maximum gas dynamic charging effect for every engine speed.
Each engine speed is assigned a specific intake length with a maximum gas-dynamic charging effect. In order to achieve a high torque in the lower speed range without a simultaneous loss of maximum power, the intake manifold length must be changeable and adaptable to the respective speed. Current intake manifolds meet this requirement by opening and closing additional channels using a flat slide valve, rotary slide valve or throttle valve.
From DE 40 41 200 C2 a switching element of the type mentioned at the beginning for an air collector is known which has a pivotable pipe elbow which forms the second flow path. The pipe elbow is held pivotably in the air collector with a bearing attached almost to the center of mass on a pipe elbow wall. In a first position, an outlet opening of the pipe elbow lies directly against an inlet opening of the inlet elbow, as a result of which the flow connection is established between the second and third flow paths.
In a second position of the pipe elbow, the outlet opening of the pipe elbow is spaced from the inlet opening of the inlet elbow, whereby the flow connection between the second and third flow paths is interrupted, but is established between the first and third flow paths. The switching element has the disadvantage that, due to the relatively large mass of the pipe bend, a comparatively long switching time is required for switching between two flow paths. In addition, the switching operations are accompanied by disturbing switching noises due to the large masses.
From AT 404 162 B a switching element designed as a rotary slide valve is known, with which it is possible to switch between three different suction lengths. The switching element is, however, relatively complex, since a rotary valve is required for each cylinder and each rotary valve is actuated by its own shaft, which has a disadvantageous effect on the production outlay and the susceptibility to errors. The calibration of the switching elements to each other is also extremely difficult.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Furthermore, switching elements for switching between different intake lengths are known, which are essentially designed as flaps or as flat slide valves. Flaps have the disadvantage that it is usually impossible to avoid influencing the flow in at least one of the two positions. Flat gate valves are problematic in terms of wear and operating behavior and have the disadvantage that sealing is difficult.
A switching intake manifold for an internal combustion engine is known from EP 0 201 180 B1, wherein a switching flap is used to switch between a long and a short flow path. Flaps of this type have the disadvantage that, owing to the inadequate sealing function, leaks occur in the closed position, which reduces the gas dynamic charging effect.
The object of the invention is to avoid these disadvantages and to develop a switching element which is simple in terms of production technology, which enables short switching times and allows optimal use of the gas dynamic charging effect.
According to the invention, this is achieved in that the switching element has at least one valve plate, which in the first switching position lies axially on a valve seat, and in that the switching element can be actuated via a toggle lever mechanism. The switching element pivots during the switching movement from the first into the second switching position not into the intake pipe, but into the collecting space, as a result of which the flow is influenced only minimally. The toggle lever mechanism permits a non-linear movement of the switching element along a predefined flat curve, which is selected such that in the first switching position the valve plate rests on the valve seat and leaks are avoided, and in the second switching position the switching element into a position which no longer adversely affects the flow Position is swung out.
It is preferably provided that the switching element has a base body which is mounted in the intake manifold housing via a one-armed lever.
In a very compact embodiment variant of the invention, it is provided that the switching intake pipe has a plurality of intake pipes and the switching element has one valve plate per intake pipe. As a result, the number of parts can be kept very low.
It is very advantageous if the toggle lever mechanism has a push rod which engages the switching element and is rotatably connected via a swivel joint to a support rod which is rotatably mounted in the intake manifold housing, an actuating rod connected to an actuating device acting on the swivel joint.
In order to achieve a reliable and rapid closing of the switching element, it is provided that in the first switching position the lines of action of the bumper and the support rod are directed essentially the same, the deviation of the lines of action from an overlap, preferably a maximum of 30, particularly preferably a maximum of 150 .
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In order to avoid leaks in the first switching position and to prevent flow influences in the second switching position, it is particularly advantageous if the one-armed lever, the support rod and the bumper form a kinematic guide system with a translatory and a rotary component for the switching element, so that the Switching movement of the switching element in the area of the first switching position is essentially translational and in the area of the second switching position is essentially rotatarian. It is preferably provided that the support rod has a greater length than the bumper.
This design of the toggle lever mechanism enables a particularly large opening
EMI3.1
In an advantageous embodiment, it is provided that the actuating device has an actuating shaft which acts on the actuating rod via an adjusting lever. The actuating rod is thus controlled by a rotating actuating movement. However, it is equally possible to apply the actuating movement in an oscillating manner to the actuating rod, for example by means of an actuating piston.
The valve disk preferably has one or more sealing elements, which are preferably made of rubber. The sealing elements can be designed to be insertable. It is also possible to spray the sealing elements onto the valve plate.
EMI3.2
minium or magnesium. Plastic can also be used as the material.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the figures.
1 shows the switching suction tube according to the invention in section in a first switching position and FIG. 2 shows the switching suction tube in section in a second switching position.
The switching intake manifold 1 for an internal combustion engine for changing the resonance-effective intake length of the intake flow path has an intake manifold housing 2 for one or more intake manifolds 3, which lead to intake ducts of the internal combustion engine (not shown). In the exemplary embodiment, three suction pipes 3 arranged side by side in the suction pipe housing 2 are shown. Each suction pipe 3 extends from a plenum-like collecting space 6 via an arcuate pipe section 4, which forms the long flow path 5 of the switching suction pipe 1. In the wall 7 of each suction pipe 3 adjoining the collecting space 6, a transfer opening 8 is arranged, via which the suction pipe 3 can be connected to the collecting space 6 bypassing the long flow path 5.
This flow connection that bypasses the long flow path 5 is referred to here as a short flow path 9. The flow connection is controlled by a switching element 10, which has a valve plate 11 with sealing elements 12 made of rubber per transfer opening 8, which in the first switching position shown in FIG. 1 rest on the valve seat 13 formed by the intake manifold housing 2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The actuating element 10, via which the suction lengths of a plurality of intake pipes 3 can be controlled, is rotatably mounted on the intake pipe housing 2 of the switching intake pipe 1 via a single-armed lever 14. On the control element 10, a bumper 15 engages, which is connected via a swivel joint 16 to a support rod 17, which support rod 17 is also rotatably mounted on the intake manifold housing 2. The fulcrums of the lever 14 and the support rod 17 on the intake manifold housing 2 are designated 14a and 17a.
Furthermore, an actuating rod 18 acts on the swivel joint 16, which acts essentially translationally on the swivel joint 16 and thus, in the first switching position A shown in FIG. 1, causes the push rod 15 and support rod 17, which act as a toggle lever, to spread.
As a result, in the first switching position A, the valve plate 11 of the switching element 10 is pressed onto the valve seats 13 and a secure seal is brought about. The bumper 15, support rod 17 and adjusting rod 18 form a toggle mechanism 23.
The actuating rod 18 is deflected by means of an actuating device 19 which acts in a translatory or rotatonic manner. In the actuating device 19 which is indicated in the figures, it acts on the actuating rod 18 via an actuating shaft 20 and an adjusting lever 21. However, actuation by means of a piston which acts directly on the actuating rod 18 in a translatory manner is also possible.
In the first switching position A shown in FIG. 1, the lines of action 15 ′ and 17 ′ of the bumper 15 and the support rod 17, indicated by the dash-dotted straight lines, are almost overlapping, the deviation from a complete overlap shown by the angle a being less than 300. The actuating rod 18 acts transversely on the bumper 15 or the support rod 17, the line of action 18 ′ of the actuating rod 18 spanning an angle ss of approximately 900 with the line of action 15 ′ of the bumper 15.
In the first switching position A shown in FIG. 1, the air is sucked in from the collecting space 6, which is poured between the channel walls of the intake manifold housing 2, and passes via an intake funnel 4a into an arcuate tube section 4 and further via an intake manifold 3 to an inlet duct the internal combustion engine.
2 shows the switching element 10 in its second position B, in which the transfer opening 8 is opened and the flow connection between the collecting space 6 and the suction pipe 3 is made bypassing the long flow path 5. The switching element 10 is pivoted far away from the transition opening 8 so that the flow along the short flow path 9 between the collecting space 6 and the suction pipe 3 is not hindered. The control rod 18 and the support rod 17 are in an extended position.
By suitable design of the lengths of the bumper 15, the support rod 17 and the actuating rod 18 and the one-armed lever 14, as well as by a suitable choice of the position of the pivot points 14a of the lever 14 and 17a of the support rod 17, this is made possible by the lever or.

rische, as well as a rotational movement of the switching element 10. In the region of the first switching position A, a translational movement of the switching element 10 in the axial direction with respect to the transfer opening 8 and in the region of the second switching position B a Rotatonic movement is desired.
The translational movement ensures that the valve plate 11 is securely closed on the valve seat 13, and the rotary movement causes the switching element 10 to pivot far out of the area that impedes the flow
EMI5.2
In order to keep the masses to be moved as low as possible, the base body 10a of the switching element 10 together with the one-armed lever 14 are made of aluminum, magnesium or plastic. Bumper 15, support rod 17 and adjusting rod 18 can be stamped from aluminum sheet or formed by other dimensionally stable materials with low weight, such as magnesium or plastic. The sealing elements 12 can be insertable, for example made of rubber. It is also conceivable to spray the sealing elements 12 directly onto the base body.
The adjuster housing 19a of the adjusting device 19 can be produced from aluminum and using the die-casting method. As an alternative to this, the adjuster housing 19a can also be formed from plastic or magnesium in the associated manufacturing processes. The suction pipe housing 2 together with the suction pipes 3 and the arcuate pipe pieces 4 and the suction funnels 4a can also be made of aluminum, magnesium or plastic.
The switching suction tube 1 according to the invention with the toggle lever mechanism 23 has the advantage that a plurality of suction tubes 3 can be controlled simultaneously via a switching element 10 and the number of parts can be kept very low. This results in a very simple manufacture and a simple calibration of the individual sealing elements 12 for each intake manifold 3. The essentially axial closing movement of the control element 10 enables an excellent sealing function. The wide swiveling movement avoids any adverse influence on the flow.
